Fleas!!! So my neighbor's cat who lives downstairs had fleas about a month ago and I'm thinking that Izzy got them from her. She bombed her apartment and said that it worked. Today I noticed a few crawling over him...so I gave him a bath with herbal dog shampoo. I dont have any flea shampoo on hand so this is going to have to work. I saw a few in the tub and one fell off as I was blowdrying him. So hopefully they are gone. Then I gave him his flea meds. I don't understand how he caught them. I just gave him the meds a month ago. Any other suggestions on how I can get rid of them? The thought of this is making me itch. Ugh. |
Vacuum everything thoroughly, every nook and cranny. Someone suggested on another thread putting a flea collar inside the vacuum bag. Otherwise, replace the bag and bring the used one outdoors when finished. Keep vacuuming, because eggs continue to hatch. Wash everything that can washed: bedding and clothing. If you see more on your pup, bathe with original Dawn dish soap. The blue one. Hopefully you caught the flea early and will be able to get rid of them quickly. |
Maximo is right. Vacuum everything. Fleas like to lay eggs under the cushions of your furniture and along the edges of your walls as well as in the carpeting. Moth balls also work in the vacuum. Make sure when you empty the vacuum that your take the contents outside right away or they will just re-enter your home. July, August and September are usually the worst months for fleas. They can jump on you outside and ride in on your shoes or clothing. One flea can lay hundreds of eggs. I would invest in a flea comb because many times you cannot tell if fleas are on your pet until you comb through their fur and catch them in the comb. If you found that many from a bath you have a problem. When fleas are so prevalent this time of year sometimes the flea meds just don't last the whole month. I use Capstar if If I find fleas in between regular Advantage treatments. Also, fleas cause tapeworms in dogs and cats. After you are sure your pet is flea free you may want to check into some worm treatment from your vet. |
Thanks for the tips guys...I am cleaning and washing as I speak. Do you think because her cat is inside and outside is the reason why it happened? Our apartments are pretty close together and she's(my cousin, not the cat) been upstairs and I'm wondering if the fleas came up here with her  I've had Izzy for 5 years and have never had this problem. Ugh, I feel so bad!:( |
I went for years without ever having a flea with my other dog and I walked him everyday at least twice a day. Then one year we got fleas and no animals had been to visit. I don't know why they show up. My other dog was very allergic to fleas and would go nuts if even one got on him. At the time I had one strictly indoor cat so I knew he had not brought any in. Hope you can get rid of them soon. If your dog goes outside at all he may be picking them up wherever he walks. Other dogs may be bringing them into the area. |
