Please help, puppy scratching until he bleeds! I'm a new yorkie owner, my puppy's name is Naeco and he has become an amazing addition to my family! But Naeco has a big problem. He has been scratching the outside of his ears until they bleed. I asked the vet for advice, and he only said to give him a bath with a moisturizing yorkie shampoo, which he gave me, and I've done. It didn't really seem to help at all. He said there is a possibility its a bacterial infection on his skin that many puppies get, but that it would clear on it's own. Well, in the meantime, even if that were the case, which I don't think it is, I can't just watch him rip off scab after scab. I keep him from scratching as much as possible and clean his little wounds every time he makes it raw but it really seems to bother him. He'll be playing happily, then stop immediately to try scratching. Also, I rescued Naeco from an acquaintance who said she adopted him, could no longer keep him and was bringing him to the pound; because of this I'm unsure about his breeder/parents. If anyone has dealt with this before, or if anyone knows of ANYTHING I can do to help him, please reply. Thank you. |
Hi. Welcome. I really think you should consider either taking your dog back to the vet you already saw or getting a second opinion. A scraping of the ear for a specimen probably needs done to identify the source of the problem to properly medicate - bacterial source, yeast source, fungal source? Each different possibility requires a different course of treatment/medication. Especially if the puppy is scratching so much there is scabbing and bleeding, this really should be addressed. I'm sure this is painful to the little one. |
Oh no! I don't think I'd go back to that vet. :thumbdown Any type of persistent scratching means there "is" something going on with you pup. There's a list of things it "could" be and your vet should be active in finding out what it is. It could be anything from dry skin to allergies from environment or food. It could be insects from outside or detergent you use. Did you check his ears? Anyway a couple of my babies had to be put on prednisone (short term) along with an antibiotic and prescribed shampoo. My Mia had an immediate improvement. Go back and insist that they look him over again or find a new vet. :) Hope your baby feels better "soon"! |
Could it possibly be ear mites? I think I would try a different vet. |
I would be looking for a new vet. For him to say it could possibly be this or that. Why isn't he finding out what is wrong? Poor little guy. That has to be misarble. I would try to find a vet that showed some caring and doing something for him. Good luck. Hope your baby feels better soon. |
I would go to a different vet ..... |
There are so many things that could be causing the scratching. Ear mites, fungal infection, an allergy, etc. Your vet should have done a swab on the dogs ears to find out what is going on. You don't let an animal scratch it's self until it bleeds and then say, 'give it a bath.' Find another vet. |
Did you ever find out what the problem was (why he was scratching his ears)?? |
