New FurMom Hello, I am a new yorkie mom and slowly adopting to all the processes. I bought my Sparkle from a less than reputable breeder and later realized she had fleas. I got her started on flea treatment in the first week and began taking her to PetSmart for grooming one every two weeks. I recently stopped taking her but continued the flea treatment. I have noticed she scratches a lot (always has from day one) but not he is rubbing on her ears and has white flaky patches on her bottom area. I went and bought some Oatmeal based puppy shampoo and bathed her on Saturday but now she is still very dry and the flakes are not improving. She hates to be groomed and bites at me or the comb/brush the entire time. When I bought her she was eating puppy chow, I am thinking of changing her brand of food but just did not want to constantly switch. Is there any suggestions to treat the severely dry skin on my baby, she will be 5 months on the 4th of August? Also, any suggestions on her overall care or anything as I am a first time pet owner and new mom and open to any suggestions or helpful tips. Thanks in advance :):) |
Hi from Oklahoma City, Sorry I can't answer your question or offer suggestions, but I would like to welcome you to YorkieTalk. I am still a pretty new member myself, but I hope you learn as much as I have. There are a lot of nice people on this forum, and they are more than willing to help. I'm sure there will be someone very soon who can answer your questions. Welcome again! |
Welcome to YT! Have you brought up the issue with her vet? Your vet can best advise you on what to do. It could be that she has allergies, or it could be that she has some other issues that needs to be addressed healthwise. IMO, you should try changing her food. Just make sure that when you do, do so gradually. I am thinking maybe she is allergic to something in the food that's why she is scratching so much? |
Hello and welcome to YT! Congrats on your new puppy! what are you feeding her? Try a dog food that has omega and flaxseed as ingredients. My boy was the same way but it was puppy dander which is common in puppies. They usually grow out of it. I had a very tough time with him because i was allergic to his dander and had extremely bad reactions to it. I bathed him with oatmeal shampoo once a week and remember to brush her hair often because it helps circulate natural skin oils. It took me a month but it worked! Good luck to you and Sparkle! |
Welcome!! I would def change her food to a better quality food. But do so gradually! They have sensitive tummies and you don't want runny poop to add to your list of things to worry about lol. Blue Buffalo, Merrick (although very rich), Natural Balance, are just three really good brands you can read up on and maybe try. My furbaby Madison loves Natural Balance Potato and Duck formula. She's never had flaky skin issues but her coat was never really nice and soft or shiny so I read up on Coconut Therapy and all of it's benefits on the skin, coat, overall heath and it truly is like a miracle in a jar. You can try the oil or the chips (we have the chips) and it really, really does wonders! |
Welcome to YT. Someone here should be able to help. :) They are a bunch of helpful and caring people. |
Welcome to YT. I highly recommend that first you have your baby checked by a vet. A vet will likely be able to tell you immediately what the problem is and save you and your baby lots of suffering and time and money. Her ears should be checked for infection or mites. Has she had her rabies vacc yet? Now would be a good time for that too. |
