Grunting - is it normal? Hi I'm new to this forums but I hope that someone here can give me some advice. I've got an 18 month old yorkie (Gizmo) and he often grunts when I take him for a walk. This is getting so loud that someone yesterday made a comment about him sounding like a pig. Is the grunting something I should worry about? :confused: |
Welcome, I am not sure, someone on YT can tell you, we have a lot of wonderful people and great information. Have you asked your vet? Is he in pain? My Calvin growls when you pick him up or try to move him. |
Welcome to YT. :) Hard to say without seeing your dog and hearing the grunting. Do you use a harness and not a collar? Does he pull on the leash or walk easily? Is he the correct weight for his bone structure? If he is overweight, the grunting could be from exertion. Grunting could be related to anything from excitement to leash/harness pulling, or worst case, extra weight or collapsed trachea. How long has he been grunting? |
He wears a harness when we are out on a walk. He is 7kg but is a standard yorkie and the vet says he is the correct weight for his size. He does it more at this time of year than in the winter but it seems a lot louder at the moment. Could it be because of the heat? He does pull sometimes but he does it on a slack lead too. I have spoken to the nurse at the vets and she told me to lift his chin when he does it- easier said than done! |
Glad to hear he is the proper weight. Probably not heat alone. Usually the heat will just make them pant loudly, not grunt. It does sound a bit like the reverse sneeze but he only ever does it when we are on a walk and only when he is on his lead. He does it more when we go to a place he has never been before. If it is reverse sneezing is something causing it? Thank you for helping with this - I was starting to worry about it. |
Hobbes does the reverse sneezing when he gets excited. especially in the morning. |
If it is reverse sneezing, it could very well be caused by excitement. I have read many comments like Susan's above about Yorkies doing this when they are excited. My boys do it every once in awhile and I followed advice I read here to put my finger over their noses so that they are forced to swallow. This stops the episode instantly. Blowing in their nose (you don't have to have your mouth very close) also works sometimes. |

One more thought, you said it happens more during warmer weather than cold. Could be all of the allergens, pollen and dust and mold, for instance, that are also a factor. When you have time, share some pictures with us of Gizmo. Everyone here loves pictures. :) |
