Yeast infection *NOT* in ears.
 
I have a bit of a different problem with yeast. I've had my Chloe (3) on a daily pro-biotic for a few months now and her ears have never been better :) ...good news right?

My problem is her skin. She has that yeast smell and has dark skin swollen areas that my vet had previously advised were yeast infection. And... she scratches like crazy. The vet had me switch her to wet food (I buy gain free), I have the shampoo for yeast and bathe her every 3 to 4 days but the skin problems just won't go away.

Any suggestions to clear this up and prevent it in the future?

Didn't your vet give you a cream for it? Probiotics can help prevent a yeast infection if you are taking antibiotics, but once you get a yeast infection you need a cream to clear it up.

When Daisy was younger she had yeast on her skin - a course of oral ketoconazole got rid of it.

Yes, you're right, an oral fungicide would even be better. I just meant that the probiotic probably wouldn't cure it.

I realize the pro-biotic won't cure it...just wondering why she got it again while on the pro-biotic. What else can I do to stave off yeast infections in the future?

Had she been taking antibiotics? I usually take a probiotic along with an antibiotic and a few days after I stop the antibiotic. That usually does the trick for me. However, if you're too run down, maybe that won't even work. Antibiotics kill all bacteria, good and bad. The good bacteria can keep fungus, like yeast, in check, but when all the good bacteria is killed, yeast grows unchecked. Probiotics introduce the good bacteria back into the system, but sometimes it's too little too late. Also, it's possible that your probiotics have gone bad.

I had a pup with a yeast infection and have shown his pic many times before; but need to show it again for the OP. For those of you who have seen it, sorry for the repeat.

My vet told me to bathe him in Selsun blue shampoo 3 times/week followed by a warm water and vinegar rinse (50/50). I asked her why not an anti fungal and she said it was not needed. Being that I trust my vet, I tried it although I must say I was a bit skeptical. Well, within a week or two his skin was clearing and hair started to grow back. (He had lost a lot of hair..came to me from a shelter). A year later he was gorgeous.

Yeast is a base and vinegar is acid so it works really well to counteract the yeast! BTW it did NOT burn him as many people seem to think it would.

At the birth center I work at, we tell moms to put yogurt on the areas that give them problems, if you know what I mean?? Slather her in plain yogurt-it won't hurt if she licks it off even.

Oh my goodness, what a difference in the before and after pictures! He is a lucky fellow to have found a wonderful home!

My sweet Cody passed away in Augsut 2009. When he came to me he was in renal failure. I had a wonderful four years with him. It finally claimed him but he did very well until the end. He was the sweetest pup ever! He would have been 13 in October of that year. He had been turned over to the shelter by his owner, an elderly man who could not care for him. He even left his papers with him, as if that really mattered. I was heartbroken and am actually in tears now typing this. He was such a wonderful pup ... wish I could have had him longer...but I treasure the four years I did have.
