How much food is right for my Yorkie? Hi everyone: My Yorkie will be 1 yr. on 8/11 and she's putting on some weight. I think I'm feeding her too much can food but don't know how much is right for her. She a minature yorkie and last weight was 3.8lbs. How many oz a day should I feed her of canned food? I'm feeding her dry food and the package said 54gr for a 4lb which is fine, it's the can food that I'm not sure of. Help! Naomi & Princess Chloe |
Does she eat solely canned? How much exercise does she get? Can you easily feel her ribs? It's hard to determine she's overweight without a picture. One year old is a time when a lot of Yorkies fill out too so it may just be her growing. Jackson was 12.5lbs up until he turned a year old. He now maintains a 16lb weight at almost 3yrs old and has stayed there since. |
Princess Chloe is a minature yorkie and very small. I touch her ribs and I can't feel them, so thank for the info I'll just cut back on her can food and let her free feed on her Royal Canin dry food which she likes. Thanks for your help! Naomi |
There is no such thing as a "miniature" Yorkie. Yorkies are just Yorkies. The AKC standard calls for "not to exceed 7lbs" but a lot of Yorkies end up bigger, or smaller than usual. But there are no separate classes, such as a Poodle (Toy, Mini and Standard). For reference, my very active 16lb boy eats between 1/2 cup per day on average. I up it when he is more active. But every dog is different and has different metabolisms. |
Yes I agree, there is no seperate category as minature for yorkies, however since there is such a diference in sizes and weight of many yorkies I just said minature to emphazies her size and weight. She falls in the AKC category and I can't see her reaching 14lbs in her little frame. At 3 mths her weight was 2lbs, so I believe she won't reach more than 5lbs when fully grown. Your Yorkie will tell you how much to feed her, but don't let the scale guide you too much. A little fat is healthy; of course too much can put unnecessary stress to the joints. Has your vet told you that she's has too much excess weight? The recommended amount on a bag of food, is just an average, and your dog may need more or less, depending on the activity level, or their metabolism. Ask the vet about a healthy weight range, and then you can monitor the food you give her knowing that. Most Yorkies grow till about 1½ years, and then after that it’s excess weight. Also, when reading the recommended amount, the company is assuming that that is all the food you are feeding each day, not per meal, and if you are feeding several different foods, you don't want the recommended amount of each, your baby will be obese in no time! |
Hi Nancy, thank you for your comments. Princess Chloe is post surgery of AAI going onto her third week. She is grounded in her cage and kennel until her next check up on 8/16. Her neuro vet. mentioned that she had gained a little weight and that I was to watch her, but didn't give me any recommendations. I do imagine that she has put on a little weight do to her inactivity. Prior to her surgery I was free feeding her dry food, but she also developed allergies and her derm vet placed her on an elimination diet of Royal Canine canned and dry food which she likes. I'm going to call Royal Canine today for them to give me the caloric info since the can food doesn't say it on the can. We shall see what they say, thanks! Naomi & Princess Chloe:) |
