Help!!! Quick vaccine question

Help! Muggsy is getting neutered tomorrow morning!

It will be the first time he has been seen by a vet in America. Does anyone know what the *Vanguard Plus 7* vaccine includes? Right now I'm completing his paperwork but it's difficult to find anything about it. Apparently it's often given in Europe but not America. (Vanguard Plus 5 is routine here?)

Anyway if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. Obviously I'd like to know for what exactly he has and has not been vaccinated. Muggsy is my first dog and none of the vets he's seen spoke English so I don't feel as informed as I'd like.

Thank you!!!

Hi Elizabet, I'm not sure by your post if Muggsy is going in for his neuter and the administration of vaccines on the same day. If so that is not a good idea. No vaccines should ever be done at the same time as a surgery and anesthesia or when a pet is ill. It is to much for the immune system to process at one time. The vaccines should wait for about 4 weeks and only if Mugsy is well.

As for the combo vaccines. A lot of vets use these even though they are not recommended by many of the vaccine researchers, like Dr. Dodds and Dr. Schultz, nor are they the safest way to vaccinate a loved pet. They contain many unnecessary components, and they can over whelm the immune system which has to process the multiple ingredients they contain.

Dr. Dodds has a vaccine schedule that is very helpful in these cases. You can print it out and carry it with you....

Vaccination Schedule Recommendations For Dogs

As you can see she only recommends the core vaccines, parvo, distemper and rabies.

Corona is not used anymore and lepto and lyme have more adverse reactions than befits so they are not generally recommended....

Giving combo vaccines (multi-valiant, polyvalent) and/or several shots at once increases the risk of adverse reactions as well as the risk that the vaccines will interfere with each other, resulting in neutralization or negation. (American Animal Hospital Association)

We don't repeat vaccinations for parvo and distemper because we need vaccines more than once to form immunity. They are repeated for two basic reasons only: Habit, and to catch those few individuals who for some reason don't respond to the first vaccination. A single immunizing dose of a modified live virus vaccine - in other words, one vaccine that works - will form long term, probably lifetime, immunity to parvo and distemper. (Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy XIII; 2000)

You should NEVER give Rabies at the same time as the other vaccines. You should never administer vaccines together, never the mumbo jumbo, never with anesthesia and never with surgery. Never use vaccines that contain both bacterins and viruses. To do so is not good practice, escalates to being a reason to remove a veterinarian's license and when done in the previous entirety, is OBSCENE.
Dr. Schultz does not recommend nor does he use either the Lepto vaccines, nor the Lyme
vaccine even though he lives in an endemic area for both of those diseases. He already stated omit the corona. He doesn't like nor recommend the bacterins vaccines so Lepto and Bordatella parenteral are OUT. If you must consider Lyme vaccine use the recombinant DNA Lyme from Merial.
If you must vaccinate against Lepto, realize these facts: there are over 2,000 serovars of lepto
but only 4 cause diseases in the dog. There is no cross protection from some of the serovars. Lepto
only protects for a very short time (4-6 months). Lepto then needs to be administered every 6 months to attempt at any protection, and those bacterins can easily result in more pathology than the few that will actually become exposed. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/k9health/...esentation.pdf

I wish Muggsy a safe and speedy recovery on his neuter.....

Thank you so much for helping me. The information you posted is just what I needed. Muggsy's operation is tomorrow but he received his vaccines in March. I had trouble because his records from Europe do not detail his vaccines individually. (Except of course for the rabies vaccine.) His pre-op forms on the other hand inquire individually about the vaccines.

I'm very annoyed about these vaccines!!! Because of our traveling our focus has mainly been ensuring he has everything he needs. We do so many things to keep him healthy, happy, and comfortable yet we managed to give him useless vaccines that could be very harmful. Unfortunately I've found that there's usually one way of doing things in Eastern Europe and alternatives are hard to come by, so who knows if we could have gotten something else rather than that combo vaccine. It just bothers me! :thumbdown

Obviously, I'm happy to be better informed and thank you, thank you for the information.

is this normal...? :-/ (post neuter update)

I took Muggsy this morning to be neutered. We didn't have any issues related to vaccines/paper. When I picked Muggsy up this afternoon he was happy to see me then relaxed and stayed calm. After a few minutes in the car he began trying over and over again to get comfortable but it was in possible. He sounded so distressed like I've NEVER heard him sound before. Finally we got home and he continued for awhile unable to get comfortable and really sounding sad. While waiting for my husband to arrive home he managed to fall fast asleep and has stopped his distressful cries.

His neuter site is a little disappointing though. I feel like it should look neater? His incision looks pretty...rough...and long? I don't know...maybe it's early, maybe it's normal? Honestly, I'm not very impressed...? I hope I'm way off and everything's fine. They told me everything was fine and the surgery was without incident.

Any thoughts, experiences, insight would be appreciated.

Oh his scrotum is purple-ish?

Awwww poor little guy :( Is he taking anything for pain management???

Elizabet 08-09-2011 05:36 PM

New problem after neuter surgery...with EYES:confused:

He's doing really, really well. :)

It's been exactly two weeks. His incision is almost completely healed. There are some last tiny crusty things towards the bottom of his incision. We were NOT sent home with pain medicine. Big mistake. He had a very difficult time and I was wreck. The pre-op instructions stated they have the pain medicine available for purchase but it's up to each owner. When I picked him up I asked about the pain medicine so I would be prepared in case he was uncomfortable. The receptionist told me no one gets, he'll feel fine blah blah so I hesitated for a moment then two other people commented they've done this several times and have never need it/used it. Reluctantly, I agreed and didn't get it and I'm so mad at myself because I wanted to get it but didn't because a few pushy strangers didn't think I needed it. Normally I would never let this sort of thing happen but I was completely nervous, I'd never done it before and they were all reassuring me...

Anyway...lesson learned. BUT there is a problem. Ever since his surgery he has had been tearing! Sometimes it looks like he's crying. It leaves long streaks and looks reddish against his light tan cheeks. Before his surgery he would get crusty or sometimes (please excuse me...) like a little eye booger but just in the inner corners. Nothing like this. Maybe he has a little infection or something from the clinic??

mscat 08-09-2011 08:37 PM

I am not sure why he is suddenly tearing like this. I would take him back to the vet and make sure he is ok. I am glad he healed well and is feeling better.

Ellie May 08-11-2011 04:18 AM

The vet should take a look.

Their eyes can dry out during surgery, so usually eye drops are put in that day. Wouldn't be too surprising if there is a bit of an infection or something.
