Help for a new Yorkie owner, please! My Yorkie, Scooter, is six years old. I rescued him from a shelter four months ago, with his constant companion, a 5 year old Morky, named Buttons. They had been given up for adoption with no clue as to personality, temperament and most importantly I find, food choices! Well actually Buttons eats just fine. Scooter on the other hand may eat the same thing for a week and then not. Or may not eat for a day or two. We've had the itching thing so I've been trying no beef, corn, wheat, etc. Any suggestions? Or is this just normal Yorkie behavior? Thanks for any help. |
Don't know what to tell you my 4 will eat anything. Welcome to YT and thank you for rescuing these 2 babies so they could stay togehter. |
I know many people on here have yorkies who are extremely picky when it comes to food. If Buttons has issues with itching, sounds like he may have some allergies so picking a food with no corn, wheat, etc. is definitely a good route to start with. Natural Balance has several limited ingredient formulas to choose from and seems to be a popular food when it comes to yorkies with allergy issues. Taste of the Wild may be another option as well as I've read that many dogs seem to do very well on this food, but Natural Balance would probably be my first choice. |
Natural Balance Natural Balance is the food I feed my Hunnie & Hiedi (my fur baby yorkies) they have small breed small bites formulas. Doesn't have all the unnatural fillers. Haven't had any problems! |
My yorkie has always been a finicky eater. He would eat something for a few days then quit eating it. Or go many days without eating anything. Longest was 5 days when we broke down and gave him mcdonalds hamburger patty... Yeah i know. He was never one to wolf down his food, he'd pick at it here and there (both kibble OR home cooked). We could never get him to eat any canned food until we found one he actually eats! TOTW Pacific Stream. He eats it without hesitation. He doesn't wolf it down but he does a good job of eating it within 5 minutes. I'm impressed. Plus his coat is now very soft and his itching and dry skin is gone. What a turnaround! I couldn't be any happier! I feed him about 1/3 cup twice a day. And I received samples of the TOTW kibble and laid some down for him about 2 weeks ago. I just left it there. Last night he was apparently hungry even after his second meal of canned food and stood there and ate practically all of the kibble I put down that was there from 2 weeks ago. So I always make sure I have kibble down for him now. I don't want him to ever be hungry. He isn't itching much anymore, other than from an ear infection he has. So I'm very happy. |
My dogs will eat just about anything, but my co-worker was asking me one day what I feed my dogs because he has never found a food his dog (beagle) really liked. I told him I feed mine Nature's Variety. He bought a bag and his dog loved it. He has feed her Nature's Variety ever since (been about a year now). They have a "try it" coupon available on their website if interested. |
if he won't eat for 24 hours. try give him peanut butter, small quality of it, but be careful of type of peanut butter you are giving your dog tho. I had my yorkie dog first time when he turned 2 months old. now it been a year with him. Hes kinda picky eater, he rather eat vegs & fruit over meat. Which is kinda odd! But thats ok with me, long as he eat good & healthy amount of any food. I NEVER ever give him any scraps or human food from my plate, because that can lead to very picky eater mode |
