rabies vaccination There's a lot of controversy re at what age to administer the rabies vaccination. Some breeders advise not to give it until 6 mos, yet most vets say 3 mos. Our new puppy is 3 mos, but only 2 lbs. Any advice????? |

3 months is way too early!!! Most vets say that puppies should not get the rabies shot before at least 4 months (because the mother's antibodies can affect the vaccination before 4 months) |
Jackson was 7 months, I think, when he got it. Which was probably way too late and I wouldn't advise it. I'm pretty sure legally it's 16 weeks here. But he had a reaction to a different vaccine and I kept chickening out with giving him the rabies but he did fine. |
Mine got it at 4 mos |
Noah hasn't had it yet and I will postpone as long as I can. He weighs 1.2 pounds and had a horrible reaction to his last set of shots, so I'm scared to give him anything. Our vet is holistic and will do a vaccine schedule we are comfortable with. |
Our state law says 12 weeks if the puppy comes into or out of the state (Missouri), I'm not sure what is says for puppies who don't cross state lines. I think it's horrible to give rabies to a 12 week old puppy and prefer to wait until 5-6 months to give it. My vet actually says to wait until 6 months if possible, but that means you have to be very careful where you take your dog. What if they accidently nipped someone and broke the skin and the person reported you for having a dog that "bit" them without a rabies vaccination? Both you and your dog could be in lots of trouble.
