Dew Claws

I just found out my breeder does not remove the puppies' dew claws. Should I be concerned? Both of my yorkies had their dew claws removed...When would be too late to have it removed?? They are currently almost 2 days old. Please advise!! Thanks!

I have my pups deu claws removed at 3 days old, but some breeders don't , if you have a dog with them, just make sure that they get trim regularly they can grow into the skin and be very painful. my male sire still have his, because the breeder did not remove them, I never had a problem as long as they are trimed.

Thanks Carmen!! I thought it indicated bad breeder so I freaked out...good to know that it is just dependent on breeder. I'm thinking of asking the breeder to get it done and I'll pay for it or something...how much does it cost to get their dew claws removed?

Also, do you give puppy packages to owners that buy from you? What do you put in there? I'm asking because I told me breeder and she asked what is in puppy package...

Thanks!!

I do not pay anything my son is a Vet Tech working on his VMD and does all for the deu claw removal and tail docking for me.
This is a picture of my puppy packages you can share with her, in the folder is all the recomendations and registration papers of the puppy, a sign copy of the sales contract and all those goodies.. plus samples of the food the dogs get fed in my home and a very important toy blankie with the litter and mama scent..all packed in a re usable shoping back for when they go doggy food shopping...

mine still has his. and its not a problem at all!
as long as you keep the nail short there is no negative effects on the dog. (Clover reminds me by clawing at my legs, and if i can feel scratches i know its time for a trim!)

i read somewhere that dogs with dewclaws tend to turn faster when running (better balance) as supposed to the ones with dewclaws removed. which may only be an issue with working dogs or agility dogs.

i have those same cards- the pretty blue yorkie ones!! lol adorable puppy pack! the re-usable shopping bag is a great idea- i usually use the eukanuba puppy pack container (i dont feed them it- but the 1kg bag they give makes great tiny treats for tiny mouths) and a baby bag for the overflow... i tend to go a little mad with the packs! :D and the eukanuba container holds about 5kg min. of food and keeps it perfectly fresh!

my puppies dont get their dew claws removed- my vet has never thought they were big enough to have it done (missy has big litters with smaller birth-weight pups). but from kukis next litter on i'll be getting them done- probably by the other vet in the practice since he is more comfy with clipping the girls nails i imagine he would feel better about dedew-clawing yorkies!

Removing dew claws is a personal preference of the breeder. I like to have them removed on my pups to avoid a possible future issue. They can get missed, overgrow, get caught on something and be torn right off when the pups is older. I would hate to see one of my pups go through this. I know some people believe in keeping them as they think its like removing a thumb. While I agree that it is, I think its better in the long run for the dog. Again...this is my opinion. I watch my vet do the procedure and its usually pretty quick. In my current litter of four, only one of the pups cried out and it was only for a second or two.
If you really want your breeder to do it and are willing to pay for it, now is the time to ask her to do it. Its much more traumatic to have this done in an older pup or even adult dog.
Good luck with your coming new baby!

I spoke to the breeder and she says that she doesn't do it because it looks painful and that's it's equivalent to removing one of our toes. However, she says if I really want to, I will have to pay for it. I called around 10 vets in the breeder's area and found the best deal at $40 per pup for dew claw removal. Well, the thing is, there's 2 girls and I don't know which I'm getting yet, so it'd be $80 for both. Do you think it's fair that I pay for both girls? I don't mind paying for one as it's my preference to have it done...Advice please! Thanks!

I removed my pups dew claws last night...the pups really do not mind. It is not like cutting off your toe, you are removing the claw.

That's expensive. Here vet's charge $5 per dew claw.

Rather than ask what is included in her puppy package, I'd ask what kind of health testing she's done on her breeding pair and intends to do with the pups. Having vet expenses are all a part of breeding.

Just a quick note, tails and dews are done between 3-5 days. I assume since she is not doing the dews she is not doing tails. If that is the case she is NOT a good breeder, a good breeder always breeds to the standard. Our standard says tails are docked to a medium length.
Sounds like money is the only reason for this, they usually don't even cry and it does not slow them down from gaining or nursing. I just did my 2 litters and you would not know anything had been done/
Dew calws can be a nightmare, when brushing and combing they will get caught and ALWAYS grow in a circle and if not caught will grow into the bone, It needs to be watched very closely.

WOw that is crazy.... I only pay $18 per pup for dew claws and tails.

Not sure what to tell you about the girls... not sure why the breeder isn't just doing it and including the cost in the price of the pup/ all of the pups. I get mine done but it's included in the cost. I would have to think twice about that if I had to pay $40 each. Plus the cost of docking the tails.

It would concern me too that something as simple as dew claw would not be removed and make we wonder about other things like testing as well.

My Doodlebug came with his dew claws but he was born in rescue. When he was neutered I had them removed because they were causing problems. But if I were going to a breeder it I would expect this to be done and not have the breeder want me to pay for something so basic.

carmen in nj 07-13-2011 01:18 PM

amazing really to see the difference in prices for deu claws and tail docking by state, I am glad my son is a vet tech and can do this for me, but If i had to pay I am sure I would pay whatever the vet wanted, is a responsability of the breeder to assure the health and well being of the litter.:)

Jennxling 07-13-2011 02:37 PM

UPDATE::

I found a cheaper vet that will do it for $25. I really don't mind paying that $25 for the puppy I'm getting, but I just don't want to pay another $25 for a puppy that won't be mine. I spoke to the breeder and it doesn't seem like she's asking me to pay for the other puppy anymore. I also told that I'd suggest she remove the dew claws on all of the puppies and include that into the cost of the puppy.
