Allergies :( Tila's chewing again and she's been on Acana small breed and then we bought a grasslands bag. What is a good food to try? I feel overwhelmed with her allergies. The vet wanted her to stay on Acana and she's been on it for awhile, but she's still itchy and she's nibbling her feet and getting a bald spot by her nose again. We're going in for another vet visit to discuss whats been going on, but the vet said last time it seems sporadic. It seems like one issue after another with her, I love my baby so much and most of the time I just feel like a bad yorkie mama, because she has to deal with all this. |
Shame, I feel bad that you and Tila have to deal with this. Loads of Yorkies suffer from allergies and it's usually due to a food intolerance. Have you tried putting her on Orijen Lamb & Apple? An allergic reaction to either of these ingredients is very rare and if her allergies clear up while on this food, you can be sure that the allergen was in her other food. If she doesn't improve on the Orijen Lamb & Apple, I'd get another opinion from a vet who specializes in these issues. If she improves, you can keep her on the Orijen or switch to something with similar ingredients. Just make sure that you don't give her any of the "old" ingredients again. You might want to try a raw diet too. My dogs are on a raw diet and we don't have any issues. My oldest Yorkie scratched and chewed all the time while he was on kibble, but he doesn't do this on the raw diet. No more bald patches on his legs :) |
There are lots of Yorkies on YT that constantly go through stuff. It's how you handle it that's important. It sounds like no true elimination diet has been done, no envirnmental allergy skin testing has been done, no blood work has been done, no drugs have been tried consistently, etc. Is that right? Is she rubbing her nose and causing the bald spot or did it just fall out on its own? Ellie's has food allergies causing her to itch (mostly jaws, ears, and paws) if she isn't on the right diet and a bald spot on her nose that tested negative for everything, so we leave it alone. Hair kinda comes and goes -- same thing as a part of each ear. It doesn't bother her. |
No elimination diet has been tried yet, the vet wanted her to stay on Acana for at least 8 weeks and it's been that, she was on Summit before that because the feed store couldn't get any more Acana in. The itching calmed down some but she's chewing and rubbing her face/nose area. Haven't tried any drugs yet, and she did talk to me about the testing. She didn't do blood work. We were dealing with the allergies and then like I said it seemed to calm down with the nibbling, then she got her anal gland infection which we were trying to clear. And it now is. The hair didn't fall out on its own she was rubbing which I did call and tell the vet about, but all she said was to keep an eye on her. What questions should I ask and what things should I get done when I take her in? Should I get the bloodwork and enviromental testing done first or should we do the food elimination first? I feel bad enough about this, I want Tila to feel better and I'll do what I have to do to get her there. |
We see a vet derm for Marcel, and this is a wonderful guide to approaching allergies (from another site's info): http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html |
