questions to ask dermatoligist I have finally made an appt. for allie to see a dermatoligist. We have tried what I think just about everything, venison raw, lamb raw, no other foods , probiotics, fish oil, coconut oils, med shampoo/sprays, herbal/ homiopathic sprays/drops. After coming home one day to find her skin looking like a bad sunburn and a red raw area under her armpit, immediately hydrocortizone cream, cone around her head and vet appt. they gave her anantibiotic shot and tremol (sp) for 4 days then everyother day. Finally success! Or so I thought about 3 days after last dose of the tremol, starts scratching again, so I took her back to vet 2 days ago and he gave prednisone. Once a day for 3,then everyother day for 3,then every 3rd day until gone. I am reluctantly giving her the meds, I would much rather have a concrete reason for meds not masking the symptoms. Anyway...sorry for the long story, she has an appt for tues with the only derm close to us 30 min away. Other than everything I have done, what other questions or ideas can or should I ask? Thanks, Janet |
I would tell them everything you have tried and Allie's history. I tried everything with Cali to stop her constant scratching and the only thing that worked was a medicine called Atopica. It made a 100% improvement in her scratching. Good luck with the appointment and let us know how it goes. |
Will cali have to take atopica for the rest of her life? I really like to stay away from meds, but we r at the point now that she needs something poor things she scratches and chews her paws and front legs all the time. I like her hair on the longer side but she looks like she has the opposite of the "joey" I can't bear to cut it and even out. :) |
Cali will probably stay on the medicine her whole life. SHe had been on it once a day for a couple of years, we had hoped to get her weaned to once or twice a week. In the past 9 months I have gotten her to every 3rd day with no decline in her relief. If I go 4 days she starts to scratch again. I felt so bad for her before we got her on the Atopica because she would scratch day and night. Her nose was all sore and scabbed and she scratched out so much of her facial hair. She has been scratch free for years now. The Atopica is a little pricey. I was paying 60.00 for a 30 day supply. Now that she is on every 3rd day, 30 pills last a lot longer. I hope you can get some relief for Allie. I know Cali was miserable and so was I watching her scratch all the time. |
