Did I get ripped off? I just took my two yorkie girls in for their first dental cleanings. The first requirement was an annual exam, about $55 each plus vaccines for Gracie. My vet won't give vaccines or do dental cleanings unless the dogs are up to date on their annual exams. I understand the need for a pre-op exam to make sure anesthesia is safe. Today's dental visit bill was just over $800 for both girls. Both had general anesthesia with pre-op labs. They drew Holly's blood even after I told them she just had complete blood work done on May 1 and they had the results in her chart. Holly had a routine cleaning for nearly $300.00. Gracie had dental x-rays, cleaning, and two loose teeth extracted. They sent her home with some anti-inflammatory pain medications. At discharge the tech presented me with "before and after photos" and photocopies of the x-rays. I expressed my displeasure at the exorbitant price. When I mentioned the walk-in clinic charged $150 for routine cleanings, the tech launched into a spiel about how the walk-in clinic does not use anesthesia or monitoring. They just paralyze the animals and do the cleanings and extractions allowing the animals to feel pain. What is your experience with fees for dental cleanings and extractions? Should I call around in search of another vet? |
At my vet it would be about $400 for a cleaning- aside from the exam, which is necessary within three months of the cleaning. That is a routine cleaning with bloodwork which in my opinion is totally necessary if a dog is going under anesthesia. Extractions would increase the price. My oldest broke a tooth once and with xrays and extraction for just ONE tooth it was $1000.00. |
With preop bloods, exams, gas anesthesia, two extractions, cleanings, etc., that is a very fair place and in line with standard charges. If the walk in clinic is just "paralyzing" while potentially needing to pull teeth, they are doing it wrong. If they don't do bloods, they are doing it wrong. If there is concern in the mouth and xrays aren't taken, again they are doing it wrong. Sounds fine to me. Ellie's oral surgery (gum work and 9 adult extractions) was about $600 with blood work. A dental here with no extractions and before blood work is $200. |
Vet prices seem to vary a lot by location. A dental is maybe $200 where I live, I don't remember exactly, and I don't know if that includes everything. $800 for 2 sounds like a lot to me, but if you live in or near a major city with a high cost of living, that may be normal for your area. |
The fees seem to be inline with what we have here. I don't think you got ripped off, and it sounds like your vet is thorough. An annual wellness exam is a good idea before doing any procedure, in my opinion, so if you hadn't had it done for over a year, it was probably a good idea. I have paid over 400.oo for cleaning, pre-op, wellness, without any extractions, etc. I had an older girl that had a complete dental, root canal, and one extraction that cost over 600.00, (i had some extra monitoring done on her during the procedure by choice because of her age) and this was over 5 years ago, so i am sure it would be more now. |
Thanks so much everyone! |
