Dental vaccine Was camping this weekend and ran into another camper with a small yorkie of 8 years old. Her last dental cleaning she had 11 teeth extracted. Her person told me that her vet said there is a vaccine that kills the bad enzymes that cause tooth loss. Does anyone on here know anything about it? If so what do you think? It might be worth checking in on. |
I have never heard of this type of vaccine. I tried to do a google search and came up with nothing. This would be great, I hope it's true. |
***BUMP*** I'd like to know too! ;) |
it's the porphyromonas vaccine, if you would like to google it. |
It works. There are drawbacks though. More vaccines which is not always a good thing. It has to be given yearly. It can be very painful. There are side effects. The bacteria being kept under control is said to be a normal bacteria in the mouth (so is it a good thing to kill it and open the door to super bacteria?). I don't use or recommend it. Best to talk to your vet about it though. |
My vet does not recommend this vaccine. It is not common for a dog to lose that many teeth if regular dental care is done. Many people put dentals off too long and the pups end up losing more teeth. Even with good care, they can lose teeth, but not 11! |
I have 2 yorkies - Kaysi weighs 10 lbs. and Cody weighs 3 lbs. Kaysi has had it every year since getting 14 teeth pulled. It is working great for her. Cody had one shot this year and spent the next week in either the vet's office or the emergency vet. It made him very sick. It is a series of 2 shots give 2 weeks apart. Cody only received one and won't have any more. My vet did tell me that it is being discontinued after this year and it won't be available after current supplies run out. He does not know why it is being pulled. |
I prefer to only do necessary vaccines and my vet doesn't recommend the dental vaccine anyway- I keep up on dental care- teeth brushing, LEBA III or petzlife, and dental checkups and cleanings as recommended by the vet. I think if you stick to a really good protocol- the most important thing is consistency- that is the best way to keep your dogs teeth clean. |

A friend gave it to 4 of her Yorkies, they are got sick from it. I won't use any 'new' vaccines until they've been proven on other dogs. Probably being discontinued due to the number of reactions... |
Dental I brush my dog's teeth and bring him once a year to get his teeth cleaned by a service that comes to a few vet offices in the area and does the cleaning without anesethesia. Enzo seems to be happy afterward - he is great about me brushing his teeth. The name of the company is Houndstooth Pet Dental. Please do not give your dog any unneccessary vaccines - my Enzo has paid the price dearly. Most vets give the same amount of vaccine to a 5 lb dog as they do for a giant one. It is horrible. |
