curious neuter question
 
Next week I will be calling to set up Pistol's neuter. He is three years old and not neutered yet. We bought him from our breeder who was keeping him for a stud dog, but he got to big. I don't think 5 pounds 4 ounces is big but, to big for breeding I guess. My question is just out of curiosity, my regular vet charges 450.00 for pre op blood work, the surgery, pain meds, and one post op visit. My sister just had her yorkie neutered at another vet in the area and paid only 300.00 for the same stuff.I won't take him to a different vet. His vet has been seeing him since the day after we brought him home. Just wondering what most people are paying for this procedure? Any thoughts on aftercare would be greatly appreciated.

I paid between $350 and $400 but mine also needed dental extractions.

I just had my female spayed and it was only $177.00, this included blood work and pain medicine. My 2 males being neutered were cheaper than that.

Prices vary from region to region. Here in so cal I paid around $350.

I sure am glad live in Georgia, my vet doesn't even charge for office visits, just treatment or meds.

Lucky! I paid $80 2-3 weeks ago for a health certificate to take Kaji to Mex. They charge for everything here.

You Are Lucky!!
My vet charges $70 just to walk through the door.... $47.50 for a re-check fee.
I paid out $187.50 just in Examination Fees in a 3-week period just for
ear infections..... :eek: UGH!!!!

Riley's was [didnt' have a post-op appt. - He had internal dissolvable stitches....although we did have issues with them 1 1/2 months later, but there was No Charge for taking him back in, for that....]:

$300.00 = Neuter/25lbs and less, including pre-op blood work
$ 17.99 = Rimadyl Injectable
$ 13.79 = Rimadyl 25 mg (3 pills) Vet said to give 1/4 morning & night!]
$ 12.25 = E-Collar [Haven't had to use just yet.]

$344.03 = TOTAL

I will have to hug my vet and tell him how much I love him when take Calvin for Parvo shot next week. He has been our vet for 20 years.

That might be a little on the high side, but it could be much worse.

The better the anesthesia, the more staff they have on hand to make sure your ppup is safe during and after surgery, and the amount/type of bloodwork done can make the prices drastically different (in addition to the area you're in).

So a vet that does bloodwork but just a small amount or decides to use just injectable anesthesia (not a good idea at all) is almost always going to be cheaper.

So to really compare the two, each part of the procedure and the number of people devoted to your pup would have to be compared individually.

Ellie was spayed for probably less than $150 (we had done bloods not long before). The office altered pets for pretty cheap (thinking it was a service to the community). Iso, IV, monitoring, pain meds, e-collar, etc. were all included.

Wow what a range of prices. That is what i was curious about. Pistol's vet is very good. I would not take him to anyone else.

Where in PA are you? I have a good Vet here in PA too. Wondering if it's the same one. LOL!:D

I wish I could chime in with our price in Kansas,but when we got Douglas at our shelter he cost us $100 which was microchip, neuter and few shots, along with 4 lbs of food and a big bag of treats. So I don't really know the price otherwise. :)
