Won't eat from bowl Hey guys! As you know we have adopted a 6 yr old male yorkie two weeks ago. So far he will only eat his food from the floor:confused: He will not eat from the dog bowl, he'll go take one or two little bites from it and that's it, he will not eat. I don't know how to get him to eat from the bowl, any suggestions??? |
Do you think they fed him on the floor? Maybe that is what he is used to. I don't really have any suggestions at all on how to get him to eat from the bowl. I am just thinking that maybe he is used to the floor. :( |
Have you tried the small paper plates? The shelter I help out at feed all the cats and dogs on paper plates. Maybe start with those and then try a bowl again. Does the bowl make a noise that is bothering him? |

Noah won't eat out of the bowl either, but his is just stubbornness and spoiled. Is it a stainless steel bowl where he can see his reflection? I read that some dogs don't like seeing themselves in the bowl. We tried smaller bowls that weren't as deep and he will eat most of what I put in it. I can tell when he's not feeling good though because he wants to be spoon fed (he was recently in the hospital and that's how I fed him). |

i think this is a common yorkie problem. lucy will take peices of the food out of the bowl and eat them at her bed. i have heard alot of yorkie owners complain about the same thing. i agree mchelem... i think they are just stubborn and spoiled LOL |
i want to add that when Lucy had a plastic bowl she wouldnt even go near it. i had to get her stainless just to take the food out... (so maybe its different for each dog) |
Sometimes if it's a smaller dog and the bowl's kinda deep, they don't like eating out of it because when they stick their nose in the bowl their vision is blocked. They can't see if anyone's trying to sneak up on them to take their food. Try a shallower bowl or a plate. |
My four month old Yorkie is the same, he only eats from a plate. Maybe its just a common issue |
Coco is kind of afraid of her bowl and she's not even a Yorkie! We found that some the problem is when she goes to put her head in, the tags on her collar hit the side and she gets scared. So if he has tags or anything I would reccomend taking them off. Also, maybe try feeding him on a plate, sometimes they don't like their head to far to where they can't see. Good luck :D |
Buster will take a piece at a time and go to another part of the kitchen and eat. Sometimes he will throw it and play with it before he eats it. It just depends on his mood. But he's spoiled. :) |
Teddy does eat from the bowl, but much prefer to be fed from my hand. he's spoiled!! |
My Yorkie will eat and eat and eat, no matter the source...hand, bowl, plate, floor, etc. he is only 3 1/2 months. My Yorkie Poo who is 5 months doesn't seem to like the bowl. If I try to feed him alone he wont eat. He will only eat if I hand feed him or if him and Twix eat at the same time, sort of like a competitive thing. However, Twix will jump over his head, slide under him, or do whatever to get to the food. He is tall and skinny so I want to get some healthy meat on those bones! |
