Hides under bed when heartworm time comes Why does my Yorkie not want to take her heartworm tablet? |
Maybe it makes him think of going to the vet or it's just a traumatic experience all together. I think the bigger deal you make out of it the bigger deal it's going to be. Mine actually likes them and always wants more. Weird. What if you grind it up and just put it in the food? |
I just get a little bit of peanut butter on the tip of a spoon, and stick the pill in the middle of it. They love it! You can try that, or, do you do any trick or obedience training where you give her a treat for obeying a command? If so, just do a little bit of training and reward her with the heartworm med. |
Levi hates taking pills too. He doesn't run and hide, but he will spit them out if they aren't well-disguised. We use Greenies pill pockets - they are soft and pliable, and I just roll the pill up in the treat. He loves them! |
Two of mine love to take their heartworm pills. The third one spits it out. I stick it in a small piece of low sodium mozzarella cheese and he gulps it down. |
I use the Heartguard chewies. My dogs dont like the taste of the pill no matter what I put it in. I can even cut the little cubes up and give them each several treats. They think that they are treats and I'm sure not going to tell them any different. |
I agree with the other posters....try wrapping it in cheese. It could be the smell of the pill that she doesn't like. |
Try putting it in the middle of a little bite of frozen yogurt. This was the only thing that would disguise it for a dog I had as a kid. Even when nothing else worked - cheese, peanut butter, hamburger, chicken.. |
I use cream cheese for all my pill med's they take. They have no idea they are getting a pill. They think it is a treat. |
Zhoie doesn't know it's a pill either, she does her twirls thinking it's a treat. Peanut butter sounds like a good idea. I'll have to remember that in case the need arises. ;) |
Roxy knows when it's time. She sees me reach for the pills in cabinet, smells the peanut butter and she's right there waiting for her treat. No problem at all. I'll keep doing it this way until she shows signs that she's tired of that approach. She doesn't get peanut butter on a regular basis, so it's always a treat. |
