Larvae found in Wellness My daughter found larvae in the bag of Wellness Healthy Weight that she purchased from PetsMart. She was getting to the end of the bag when she noticed them. The expiration date indicated that it should not have been on the shelf. PetsMart is trying to make good on it but she's so disgusted I don't know if she will ever go back. I think it's a Wellness issue and not a PetsMart issue. Disgusting just the same. |
Not a food expert, but that would certainly gross me out. Yuk. |

Petsmart does have an obligation to monitor their expiration dates on stock on the shelves, same as human grocery market. How was you daughter storing the food at home? Was the bag inside the house and was it sealed tightly? If so, I would contact Wellness. |

PetsMart did offer her a gift card and something else, not sure now what but they are trying to make amends. The food was in the house and I hope it was tightly sealed. She's pretty picky when it comes to her babies. I think she should contact Wellness. She's still trying to get beyond the fact that she had been feeding it to her dogs. |

Well, since you were close to the end of the bag it is possible that something got into the food after it was opened. I know it sounds gross, but we see this all the time on the farm in our feed. If it was in there prior to opening the bag I think you would have noticed it before the end. Also, I don't know what kind of larvae you found, but if it can be identified, you can check the lifecycle of the insect and compare that to how long it takes to go through a bag of food. For instance, some eggs takes 10 days to hatch. If you've had the food for 10 days it was there after purchase. If there are babies and adults, then the cycle is ongoing. Just some things to consider. |
That happened to me with bird seed once. I found it right away, though. There was a tiny hole in the bag. Whenever I buy bird seed or dog food now I always check the bag thoroughly. There are lots of "critters" around Petsmart. |
I sometimes use an RX kibble for Daisy. I break it into smaller vaccuum packed ziplock bags. The same is true for my parrot's pellets any dog treats, etc. |
I have 2 Cockatiels and and I once read to freeze new food 24 hours to kill and "bugs" that may be in the bag. I wonder if this would also work with the kibble for our yorkies. |
Eeekssss! My girl eats Wellness. I will be checking it good from here out! |
Most bird seed is raw grains and much more susceptible to insect infestation than processed dog foods. I do recommend you check your bags of dog food for holes or tears before bringing one into your house. Roaches love dog food! |

Of course, Lucy eats Wellness. I have most of it stored in a tight, tupperware container; but I'll be checking the rest of the bag! |

We found nasty stuff in a Wellness bag too once. They looked like tiny little worms almost? But they weren't moving. I dunno but we threw it out! |
