Help -- Benadryl! I hope I didn't just give the wrong thing! 99% positive Jackson got stung outside just now. Was sitting out by fire (not lit), he was on leash, laid down in sand and then jumped up real quickly as if he had been stung... he started acting the same way that my dads dog did when stung, he was biting at his back foot alot and doing circles dragging the foot like it hurt him. Stepdad gave me the Benadryl I asked for, as the vet told us to always keep it on hand, I gave him half the pill... I read it should be given 1mg per lb of body weight so Jackson is 16lbs. THis little packet says "Benadryl Maximum Strength Severe Allergy plus Sinus headache" and it says Acetainophen 325mg, diphenhydramine 25mg, and phenylepine(can't read word, sp??) HCI 5mg per caplet. I gave him half the pill... so it would be 15mg of diphenhydramine... but what about the other 2 ingredients?! Did I just give him the wrong thing... so scared I just did something wrong, I never give him meds like this??? |
I was in such a rush I did not even look to see if it was just regular Benadryl!! |
Is there an ER vet you can call? I have no idea about pain medication dosage for dogs. Oh, how scary! I have just always read using regualr benadryl. When my girls got into Trident the ER was very helpful over the phone b/c we are an hour away and didn't know how long it had been since they ingested it. |
The only part of concern is that last one...is the ingredient this?:Tips From the Pet Poison HELPLINE — Pseudoephedrine and Phenylephrine Phenylephrine |
You gave tylenol and a type of sudafed, it looks like. Acetametaphen is almost always not recommended. It is toxic in large amounts. I'd be inducing vomiting (1 tsp. of hydrogen peroxide per 10 pounds, repeat in 10 minutes if it doesn't work) and calling the ER vet for further instruction. They might feel the dose is safe and not have you induce. I would not wait to induce. Not worth it. |
Praying everything is okay... |

Please call or take him to the ER quickly!! I read the link Maximo posted, and it sounds like an emergency. Please let us know how he is doing. The ASPCA poison control line is 1-888-426-4435, $60 fee. This is the same number that the vets use when they have questions. Good luck! I'll keep your baby in my prayers tonight. |
Based on his weight, he should be fine with half a pill. The problem comes if he has an reaction to any of the meds. The phenylephrine would be my greatest concern...watch for increase in his heart rate, while contacting an ER vet. |
I called ER vet right after I made this thread.... They scared me at first!!! Said it could be toxic, put me on hold, i was about to jump in the car right then and there... got back on, vet said the amount was not what she'd ever recommend for the Acetainophe but it should not hurt him, but to never do it again. The p-word was a nasal decongestant which dogs can't really process... but they did not tell me to bring him in or anything, but to keep my eye on him, which he is in my bed right now with me. He is still taking food (gave him a piece of cheese).. I am so worried though! They did not tell me to induce vomiting. |
Praying Jackson is ok and hoping you called the ER vet. He should not have been given that pill. :( Oh we posted at he same time. Please watch him carefully. |

Is it too late to induce vomiting???? He probably took the pill 30 mins ago.... I dont even know if I have hydrogen proxide in this house!! He just jumped up on the baby gate to get out of my room, and he never does that, so i am just concerned... going to take him outside.... |
Crystal's post highlighting the tylenol bears repeating for anyone else who reads this and may face this situation: Quote:
