Dental HELP! We all know that clean teeth free of tarter build up is essential of a healthy mouth. Currently I brush Leo and Max's teeth every other night, and use Petzlife oral spray every night.(Ive been using the spray for about 3 weeks now) Their back molars on each side of their mouths are where the tarter build up problem is. Today I was seeing if i could scrape off any of that tarter off with my fingernail. I actually did scrap some off, but most of it was too stuck on there for me to get off. I was wondering if anyone has used a dental scraper themselves and what they would recommend? I am also thinking about purchasing some proden plaqueoff to sprinkle on their food. Any suggestions? |
ALSO are there toothbrushes that are better than others? Right now I am just using a cheap dollar one that i get from my local pet store. They only seem to last a couple of brushes before the ends get frayed and I need to replace it. |
Scraping teeth at home is generally not recommended. There is risk from injury if they jerk. Also, you can't get under the gum line if they are awake, so most of the time it's almost purely a cosmetic procedure. The mouth should be evaluated every 6-12 months by a vet to make sure that a dental under anesthesia is not needed. The American College of Veterinary Dentistry has put out a statement on anesthesia free cleaning which vets should be following. Teeth should be brushed at least once daily. |
I have read that using a scraper is not advisable because of the risk of doing damage to the gums or injuring the dog in general. Also, scraping the teeth without following up with polishing, which is done by professionals, leaves the tooth enamel more susceptible to decay. |
