I had the girls on Heartgard since I've had them. Last year it made Lillie sick. She vomited 10 mins after I gave it to her. My vet suggested Interceptor. Said it is more gentle on their stomachs. Anyone have any input on this. Would appreciate it!

My little boy is 11 months- I gave him his first interceptor pill last month, and his second on Saturday to cover the next month. He did just fine. :)

My vet switched us from Heartguard to Interceptor a couple of years ago, and none have had any tummy issues with it at all.

I like that Interceptor has dosages that are for smaller weight ranges. For example Hearguard was for pups up to 22 pounds, while Interceptor has one that is only for up to 10 pounds. I don't feel like I'm putting all the extra chemicals into their little systems with Interceptor with their smaller dose size.

I should add that I never had any problems with Heartguard either - it's a good preventative. I'd probably still be using it if I hadn't moved and switched vets a few years ago.

I use Interceptor for my crew too. No probs with it; also, it protects against a few more things than Heartguard...if I'm remembering correctly?

We use interceptor and it does cover one other intestinal parasite as WM said (at least I still think that's true). We have never had any problems with interceptor and had switched years ago when our dog with liver disease could not keep down heartgard.

:thumbup::thumbup: That is what our vet told us. I think whipworm is one of them.

Heartgard does heartworms alone.
Heartgard Plus adds rounds and hooks.
Interceptor does heartworm, rounds, hooks, and whips.

Both Heartgard and Interceptor are good drugs and I would not hesitate to use either.

The dosing for Interceptor looks more weight appropriate for Yorkies (since it's 2-10 pounds and Heartgard is up to 25 pounds), but actually 1/5 of the dose of Interceptor given is a safe heart dose. The other 4/5 of the dose is what controls intestinal parasites. That by no means indicates that it's okay to split the Interceptor pill into fifths. It's just that what may look like a better dose is really not because a much smaller dose could really be used. However, the safe heart dose isn't available in the US.

I really like Interceptor and Sentinel. We do both here depending on my mood and the weather (no need for Sentinel in the winter).

thank you Ladies! and yes....it does control more parasites...a little more expensive but the furgirls are worth it...I am not saying Heartgard isn't a good product but, as you said...I think Interceptor is more weight appropriate. Hopefully my little Lillie doesn't get an upset belly....I am going to wait until they eat something...don't want to give it on an empty belly...I free feed so I don't always catch them eating...I think they wait until I leave for work. Have you ever given it on an empty belly? did it make them sick?

I give Interceptor to my boys with a dab of yogurt and a couple tiny shreds of Parmesan. They have never gotten sick, but they don't have sensitive tummies in general.

Our Vet recommends only Interceptor & Sentinel, although he will write you a script for others if that's what you choose to use. I've always used Interceptor on my yorkies and never had an issue with it.
