teeth! what do you use to help keep your furbutts teeth clean? I won't use greenies or raw hide chews. I tried merricks bully sticks, which I didn't think they could break pieces off and Sadie nearly choked on one so those got tossed out! I have petrodex toothpaste...they won't let me brush their teeth but I can get in there and rub it on...They save this works too. I have tried dental wipes...not good! I put oxyfresh in their water to help. There is a spray that you can use (can't remember the name of it) that my vet said would help. I would like to find something they could chew on that they can't break pieces off and choke. Could use your suggestions Thank you! |
*bump* just bumping! I know how quickly posts get pushed out |
I use Teddy's Pride Oral Care powder on their p.m. meal; before that, I was using ProDen Plaque Off. We do CET chews (both types, both in medium), some misc chews, and raw marrow bones (with most of marrow removed). |

I need to find something to help with Dolly's and Hudson's teeth. Their mouths are so tiny and they're getting terrible plaque already. :( |
I've been using it about 2mths or so..? I think it does help, but I don't have a good sense in comparing to. As for switching from ProDen, I just thought I'd switch and see what I thought of this one. Very easy to give - I just sprinkle it on food. Marcel's mouth is super tiny too...and I really just can't get in there correctly. Brenda, are you thinking of PetzLife spray or Leba III spray maybe? I tried PetzLife gel, but I just couldn't remember to be consistent since it shouldn't be given at mealtime. |
We use CET toothpaste daily, OraVet weekly, floss when I feel like it, and dentals as needed. Ellie has stage 3-4 periodontal disease (can't get much worse). She was all fixed off and has done amazingly well on with the above. There is some tartar build up, but not enough for a dental and her gums look good. It's been 3.5 years since her last dental. We don't do any chewies around here at all. She can't have them, but I wouldn't anyway. JMO, they aren't important enough to take a risk. The softer ones do cause choking and obstructions, the harder ones can break teeth, and some of them carry loads of bacteria. Less potential emergencies and vet bills to just keep 'em out of the house. :) |

The only product I have used with some success is the CET Aquadent. It did prolong the time for a couple of my pups' dentals. Most of mine need dentals yearly and I found that when I used that I was able to push a couple into 18 months. Please note that it has xylitol which has caused some people on this forum to say it is unhealthy. I did speak at length with my vet and telephoned the company. They also consulted with my vet and then sent me the paperwork I had requested regarding the amount of xylitol in this product. My conclusion for my pups is that it is safe to use. Virbac Animal Health | United States ? C.E.T. AQUADENT® Drinking Water Additive I have never seen that chews have changed anything...my opinion is that brushing of the teeth is probably the best thing; but even that does not prevent the need for dentals. |
