How much do I feed him? Baxter is 6 months old now, and weighs in at a hefty 7lbs even. He doesn't look giant, but he is heavy! I've been feeding him 1/4 cup of dry food a day, and was recently told that by a friend that I'm not giving him enough! I was wondering if that was true...I mean, he's still gaining weight, so obviously he's not starving. He does get treats, occassionally. I give him "Canine Carryout" treats, usually tiny pieces of not even one treat for training. |
I can say that in my experience, what it says in the bag is really too much. My bag of dog food calls for 3/4 cups - 1 cup a day but he rarely finish it. He is still active and looks healthy to me. I finally just trying to cut down until he started finishing his food. We recently just added raw to his diet so he gets even less kibbles now but still the same way. I just go by how he is doing. If you feel like your baby is loosing weight then give him more otherwise, stick to what your doing if its working. EDIT: I wanted to add that his vet thinks he is also a healthy weight, so him eating less than what the bag of food says is ok with me and my vet. |

A quarter of a cup of food for a 7 pound dog sounds like too little. What brand of food do you feed? What are your dog's measurements? (length and from floor to the topline at his shoulder) You should be able to feel his ribs without squeezing too hard and when looking at him bird eye view, you should be able to see a waistline. Looking at him from the side, he should have a tuck, meaning his stomach should be significantly higher than his chest line. If you are still unsure, have your vet give you an opinion on his body and diet and determine if there is a problem that requires further investigation. |
He is 12.5 inches long to tail base, and 8.5 inches from floor to top of shoulder....he doesn't look fat, I can feel his ribs okay, but his slope from his tummy to his chest is very gradual. His tummy is definitely higher than his chest, but not significantly... Vet had said at his check up a month ago, he would be surprised to see him top 6 lbs. He was 5lbs 6 oz then... |
What food are you feeding? ZoE gets a 1/4 cup of Blue Buffalo chicken & rice kibble in the morning AND the evening. |

My 7-pounder eats 3/4 cup of an average kibble per day, plus some little treats. What brand kibble do you feed? In terms of predicting growth and adult size, it's never over until it's over. Some lines mature early, others later. Six months is a little early to say your dog is finished growing. |
My girls are btwn 11 and 12 lbs, this is a healthy weight for their size frame. I feed 1/3 cup kibble in the morning and 1/3 cup in the evening. They recieve a cookie or two a day which are x-small. Does he act hungry? Are you feeding him only once a day? How does he act when you feed him? |
Jackson is a healthy 16lbs and eats 1/2 cup of kibble per day. So 1/4 in AM, 1/4 in PM, however he also gets a tablespoon of wet food in each meal and treats throughout the day and he is an adult. I'd say for a pup who is still growing, 1/4 per day is definitely too little. |
My pups are 5 1/4 and 5 3/4 pounds and they each eat 1/2 cup of kibble per day, plus they get a few treats or snacks throughout the day. |
Feeding: Purina Puppy Chow (not the best, I know, but the vet told me to finish the bag and I had just started it...LOL) He doesn't act starving, but maybe the kids are feeding him whenever his bowl is empty, LOL which would mean he's getting OVER fed, cuz I see how they feed him! LOL I think I'll switch to 1/4 cup morning and night, and be more vigilant about it. My cat is a free feeder, and its very possible Baxter is getting into kitty's food.... Thanks for all your responses, I knew I could count on ya'll! |

Definitely keep him out of the cat food, and find out what the kids may be feeding him. :) |
