Food bowl problem Hi everyone, thanks for the hellos, right now I'm worried about my little Darwin because he won't eat out of his bowl. A week ago he ate perfectly and now all of a sudden he's afraid of coming near it.I've tried putting in treats and some chicken but that didn't even work. Now I'm just grabbing the food from his bowl and putting it on the floor for him to eat, and he will. How can I get him to start eating out of his bowl again? |
I never had this problem but have read others here that have. How deep is your bowl? Our bowls are very shallow, almost saucer-like. Hopefully, someone will have advice for you. |
Thanks, his bowl isn't too deep and he loves his bowl, I don't know what happened that scared him so much. |
I wonder if you switch to a different bowl if he would return to eating from it? |
Does his bowl move around while he is eating out of it? In the past, dogs that I have had, push their bowls around if they have wet food and it gets stuck to the sides of the bowl. This could cause your pup some concern if this is what happens? Try putting a rubber place mat under the bowl or getting a bowl with a rubber bottom edge that is made just for this purpose and keeps it from moving around. A heavy towl, folded and placed under it might also help. Also,back in the day, my mother-in-law used some very old cereal bowls that smelled of cholrox to me and the smell and taste put me off of my breakfast. Not saying you have used this, but check out what is different from the last time he used it and now, what if anything is different in the way it looks, smells, 'behaves',(like if the bowl moved while he ate out of it) or where he is eating from, has something changed? I hope he gets back to using his bowl soon! |
Is it a metal bowl??? My Wally was terrified of his new metal bowl ...because he saw his reflection in it :rolleyes:. He is better now because the others eat out of it so he feels its safe. |
Thanks guys, and no my Darwin eats out of a plastic bowl, but he does get scared when I move his bowl a little bit. I did try putting a mat under it but he wouldn't go near it, should I just give him some time to go near the bowl to see if it doesn't move anymore? Thanks again :) |
If you think that the bowl moving around is the problem, then yes give him a bit of time, even fold up a thick towel and place under the bowl and make sure it is sturdy and not moving and encourage him for a bit. Then just stand back and observe and see what he does. Maybe just have to leave him alone for a bit and learn on his own. I don't think he'd starve, but keep an eye out to make sure he eats. If you have to, get another type of feeding dish for him,then you'll have two. When you have one in the wash, the other one is ready for a meal. |

Some dogs decide to not like bowls, but will eat just fine from a plate. You might want to give that a try. Good luck & welcome to YT! |

A plate or tray might work. Also, I would try to stay away from plastic bowls, some can cause allergies, some plastics are toxic, some will (even when washing often) attract bacteria growth in microscopic abrasions to the plastic material. IMHO, stainless steel is the best material to use for feeding bowls. They are corrosion, odor, rust resistant and safe for our furbutts! |
Hey everyone! Thanks for all the advice! It turns out his bowls were too deep and he was afraid to stick his head, so I switched to a plate and now he eats perfectly! Thanks again!! |
