Best food for Yorkies Hi! I'm on the hunt for the best dog food for my Yorkie. I will give you some fact about my dog to help you determine which dog food is the best for him: He is 2 years old Is a very picky eater Weighs 3 pounds (The vet says he is underweight.) Has had hip and knee problems I would like a food that not only taste good for him, but that is nutritious for him. In your opinion what is the best dog food for him? Thanks so much for your feedback! |
There isn't a simple answer, finding a good food for your dog takes some trial and error. What one Yorkie loves and does well on, might not agree with another Yorkie at all! You say that he has hip and knee problems, but is his digestion OK? Does he get an upset tummy easily? Do you live in or near a large city, or are you rural? That will make a difference as to what brands you will have available locally, to find your best options. I wouldn't want to recommend something that isn't available to you locally. Have you had his bile acids tested? Very small Yorkies that are picky eaters MIGHT have liver shunt problems, so you need to talk to your vet and rule out this possibility. |
I just read the best answer to this question on another thread. The best food for him is the one he does best with.- Maximo Unfortunately, there is not a simple answer to the food question. We went through many brands with our picky eater before finding something she enjoyed. However, other pups here do not like it. You have to find the food that works for you and your pup. |
I agree with previous posters that to find a good food, you have to do trial and error. Try different foods and see what works for your dog. Also you can email most companies and ask for samples. I got some from TOTW, Solid Gold, and Artemis. When I received my Artemis samples I was really surprised because they gave me 10 sample bags. Good luck finding what works for you and your dog. |
We have had good luck with Nature's Variety, but not all dogs do well with the same food. As others have mentioned, it may take some trial and error. Try getting several sample packs to try different foods. If/when you buy a bag of food, get the smallest bag possible first to see how it goes before you completely settle on a food. |
