Neutering at 5 months? I have an appointment to get my 5 month old neutered tomorrow, but I was wondering, is that too early for a Yorkie? I've never had a dog before, so I don't even know if his wee-wee (lol) is at the right stage to get neutered. Over the phone, the vet said dogs should get neutered around 4 months old, but I wanted to get your guys' expert opinion first. :p |
I mean, it just depends on what you believe. There is a lot of research out there regarding s/n. I personally... probably wouldn't do it at 5 months. Mainly due to the growth plates, etc. I do think it is important to let them mature a bit physically. But at the same time, I think it's very important to make sure no "oops!" happens and if a dog is marking like crazy or humping, etc, it may be necessary to do it earlier. Jackson was neutered at 7 months but he never really had a marking problem or a humping problem or any behavioral things that needed to be fixed so I held off for a while. However, 6 months is the general consensus when it comes to neutering so I am sure he will be fine. |
I got Nash neutered at 4-5 months, I waited until Kobe was 1 before I did has and now I regret waiting so long. Do it early before he gets into the habit of marking. |
IMHO, I would not neuter a pup until he's 9- 12 months old, regardless of any behavior problems. They need to grow up first, health wise and mentally. |
I had Cooper neutered at 4 months and Max neutered around 5 months of age. I have no complaints. |
I had Rhett neutered at 6 months just because I was waiting for the last of his baby teeth to fall out. Despite doing it at that time, he still lifts his leg and marks (something he didn't do before the neutering). |
I would wait until you know if all of the baby teeth have fallen out. If you neuter now and some of the teeth don't fall out as they should, you will have to put him under anesthesia a second time to have the teeth extracted. If you do it all at the same time, then you only take the risk once of him being put under once and will only bear the cost the anesthesia for one surgery instead of two. |
