brushing teeth problem My yorkie will not let me brush his teeth ... should I force it on him by holding him down? How many times should I brush? And what times would be more effective? Any suggestions!!! |
They should be brushed 1 to 2 times daily. Times really don't matter, but right after the last meal of the night would seem to make the most sense. Did you try slowly introducing the process (lick toothpaste off finger the first day, then go to rubbing teeth with finger full of toothpaste, then let 'em lick off the brush, etc.)? |
I brush ZoE's teeth every night before bed, when I brush mine :D. I started putting my fingers in her mouth as soon as I got her as a pup, (as well as touching her feet & ears) to get her used to it. Then I did exactly as Crystal suggests, I put toothpaste on my finger and ran my fingers along her teeth every night for a week or so, then I introduced the brush with the same toothpaste. I'm so glad that I did, cos now ZoE just has all her adult teeth and hopefully we'll be able to keep them in great shape with daily maintenance. |
I admit I don't brush Uni's as often as I should. But I have found that she tolerates CET toothpaste the most, and I also use their tiny fingertip brush. It's a lot easier to get it in their tiny mouths. There was a time when I was doing it a lot, and she would even take the brush (it was the larger kind, with the long handle and big brush on one side and small brush on the other) and would brush her own teeth! Not no more :( |
I have also heard that doing it burrito style (wrapping them up in a towel) helps to hold them down. |

Dolce used to do well with brushing her teeth. I would brush them once a day and she loved it. Recently though she has decided she doesnt like it anymore. She will swing her head back and forth to get away from the toothbrush. I even tried to backtrack a few steps and put the toothpaste on my finger again, but she seems to know that the toothpaste is on there. She will let me put my fingers all over her mouth as long as there is no toothpaste on there.....*sigh* she is such a little brat. I can eventually get at least all the front teeth brushed but it takes me like an hour to do just that! LOL Any tips?? |
