Very hard to find poultry free food Through process of elimination I have found out that our Yorkie Luigi ( 2 1/2 yrs old) is allergic to poultry. Everytime he eats chicken turkey or duck he gets itchy and starts days of scratching his paws, back and tail area. I find it very hard to find Dry and canned dog food without poultry in them whether it is chicken by product or chicken liver. He is right now eating Blue Buffalo Backyard BBQ, but he will eat about a half of a can (large can ) over 2 days then stops eating it. Sometimes I will sub with Beneful Beef stew or Beef Dinner (I Know not the best but it is chicken free). Even dry foods are limited in free chicken varieties. Even most treats have chicken in them. I know you can make chicken jerky from chicken breast can this also be done with steak? I was just wondering if any one else has found this to be true? If so what do you feed you little one? Any help on this would be appreciated.:( |
Natural Balance should have a few without. California Natural (although sadly now they beong to Iams) would have some also. if you are having a really hard time finding one, you can get a hydrolyzed diet from the vet (these companies will sometimes take the food back for whatever reason if things don't work out). I'd much rather see a dog on a Science Diet Rx food than Beneful. |
I know exactly the struggle you're going through. My Alexander was also determined to be allergic to chicken and it was an ordeal finding any chicken-free food a few years ago. There are many more on the market today thank goodness. Most of the chicken-free foods I found were grain free but there are some grain inclusive foods now, too. Some of my favorites are: Nature's Variety Instinct (grain free) in the Beef/Lamb and Duck/Turkey formulas. Duck and Turkey have different protein structures so most dogs allergic to chicken can still eat these proteins. Nature's Variety Praire (with grains) has a few different chicken free varieties. Acana Pacifica and Acana Grasslands (both grain free) contain no chicken. Taste of the Wild's Pacific Stream formula has no chicken. Neither does their Sierra Mountain formula. These are both grain free. Fromm is another good brand that has some chicken free formulas. Good luck in your food search! :) |
^^I see she posted already. :) Bon Bon (Bonny) feeds poultry free food to her pups. She could add to Crystal's suggestions. I think the most recent foods she has used are Acana, the fish flavor, and one of the Taste of the Wild formulas. |
Natural Balance has several limited ingredients dog foods that would not have any poultry in them. I do not recommend Calif. Natural, mine ended up with horrible digestive issues from it and I would guess the formula is no good anymore. Tinned food is not complete, a dry kibble along with a tinned would work but most tinned dog foods contain liver and could include poultry liver. My yorkies do not do well with any tinned at all. Acana is fairly good food I am sure they have some without poultry. Also bear in mind, that often those YOrkies that seem to be finicky eaters are actually having digestive issues which could include a stomach upset without actually having diahrrea or vomiting issues. They just don't feel like eating thank you. The common mistake is to try this try that dog food and they will eat one or the other but often because it is not a good food and is loaded with salt, sugar fat or all three. Sure the dog will go for it but is likely contributing to more issues and will not eat it again because they are more out of whack than ever. Also check teeth or have your vet knowledgable in teeth in toy dogs check for you. An abcess that isn't obvious or broken tooth will cause them to be reluctant to eat. |
Evengers has a couple of dry dog food products without poultry in them. One is Venison and brown rice, sweetpotato and white fish. It is a very good quality of dog food. You can go to evengers. com to see how it is made. My girls love it they eat the white fis and sweet potatoe. Linda, Sassy and Patti |
We use Taste of The Wild- Pacific Stream. I have a wheaten terrier that can not have chicken, wheat ,corn etc...- She is great on this food, digestively the best she has ever been, scratching is at a minimum, eyes and ears perfect! Ziva eats the same by default and she is so healthy and shiny. |
Pebbles does not do well on chicken based foods either. I now feed Natural Balance Brown Rice and Lamb and she does very well. You can buy it at Petco but it is also offered on Amazon with free delivery. Good luck :) |

I agree- Natural Balance has a lot of options, Nature's Variety also has a LID line now, TOTW, Acana, and all the others listed are options. |
Our non-Yorkie cannot have poultry - we use TOTW Sierra Mountain with great success. :) |
I have my guys on Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Venison because Jada can't have chicken either. It is harder to find treats with no chicken than food. |
Thanks for all your help everyone... I will try my local Petco, Pet Smart, Pet Goods and Morris Sussex Pet supply for these. :~) |
Hot Rod has a chicken allergy and it is very difficult to find foods and treats that are poultry free. I tried Stella and Chewy's freeze dried beef and lamb and thankfully they both like it and have been on it for quite some time now. I also found venison treats. I believe they are called Ziwi (??) They have several flavors. Mine 2 are nuts about it. Good luck, I know it's not easy. |
Ziwi Peak treats  |
