How do you keep your dogs teeth clean?
 
How do you keep your dogs teeth clean. I feed my dogs a raw diet and thought that would keep their teeth clean but I looked in my 2 year old Yorkie's mouth and noticed her teeth looked yellow near the gums.

I use CET toothpaste to brush their teeth with and I also use Petzlife gel about 2or 3 times a week.

Brush with CET toothpaste daily.
OraVet weekly.
Floss when I'm not being lazy.
Dentals as needed.

Brushing, which I am really bad about.
I use Proden PlaqueOff every day.
Petzlife once a week or so.
Bones (bully sticks and Himalayan chews)

I brush every other day with an all natural toothpaste. On the days that I don't brush her teeth, I use Petzlife Gel.

We do lots of chews.

And right now I'm also using Teddy's Pride Oral Care.

If I am already using a probiotic...can I add the Teddy's??? Would that be over supplementing???

The timing of this thread was perfect, I just had our new little rescue Yorkie's teeth cleaned last week. Our vet called to tell me he was done with the procedure,and really "read me the riot act" about how important it will be to brush his teeth daily. She said even annual cleanings aren't enough for Yorkies.

Luckily, the new guy is very compliant and easy to handle, so he's been great about letting me brush his teeth. But I didn't know you can floss, too.

What do you use to floss your dog's teeth? Regular human dental floss? How well does your dog tolerate getting flossed?

Also, do you or anyone else have any experience with CET's chews?

It's very rare to floss. :) For a lot of dogs, there would be risk involved because it's string in the mouth. The most important thing to remember is that you have to be extremely careful that it isn't swallowed.

I have used the regular dental floss (long string in a plastic box) before. She doesn't like when I go in between each tooth, but she likes when I hold both ends and she runs it through her own teeth. lol. I have also used the individual flossers with the plastic handles (like 100 to a bag). Hands don't get as slimy that way and there is less risk of them swallowing some, but be careful not to hurt the gums with the plastic edges on those things.

She pretty much hates it unless she gets to play with it, but she isn't given a choice.

My little ones are both 6 now. I have brushed their teeth with CET EVERY DAY since they were babies. This year, they both lost mega amounts of teeth. The vet said it would be even worse without the brushing. I really don't think brushing did any good at all though. It is very discouraging to put so much effort for them, for nothing. Years ago, I had a Maltese, and I did not brush her teeth, but she had much better dental health.

Most studies say you can't really over-supp on probiotics (human studies, that is). If you're concerned a bit though, you could alternate every other day.

I've been using Teddy's for about a month now...or two? I think it is helping w/ teeth, to be honest. It's not a *huge* difference...but I can tell a difference.

I love the CET chews too - I use both the enzyme ones, and the chlorhex ones. Even tho petite would be a better size for my Marcel - I instead use Mediums for all 3 of my kiddos. Marcel almost died from choking on a piece from the petite size (that size is way more vulnerable to small pieces being bitten off).

I have been using Apple Cider Vinegar in the water for months now (got info from a thread on here)...I also have been giving them deer antlers to chew on..

I can't say for sure if its any one thing, but they both got some pearlie whites..I do brush, not as often as i used to:rolleyes: but at least once a week :eek:
