Guess we need to switch - please help with brand of dry food Sophie has been on Wellness Super 5 Small Breed for quite some time. She eats it fine, and I have been happy with it. The problem is she does have eye gunk, and I've read there are some brands out there that make this happen more than others, Wellness being one. She also has VERY stinky gas all the time. Just sitting at my computer the last hour she has passed gas at least 5 times. Surely this is due to her food. I know NOTHING about researching a good brand of dry dog food. Does anyone know of a good one they would recommend? I'd like to get one that doesn't make her poop smelly and alleviates the eye gunk. I will also need one that I can buy online, and if you know a site where it is more reasonable, that would be so helpful. The only place I have local to buy dry food is Petsmart, and they really only have the Wellness and Blue Buffalo. I tried the switch to BB several months ago, but even doing the slow transition, she had diarrhea....so I don't think that would be a good brand for us. Thanks in advance for any and all help. |
Are you sure there are no small hardware-type stores near you that sell food? You can often find TOTW at Tractor Supply stores, etc. We just started TOTW and I am super pleased with it so far. His eye boogers have been practically non exsistant all week, his poop has been small, hard and formed and not that smelly from what I can see. He never has gas (but did not have gas on Acana, either). Does your Petsmart sell By Nature? Some do, some don't. It's a pretty good food but not grain free. Castor & Pollux is also a decent line at Petsmart, I believe. |
She may have had diarrhea due to too high a fat content. I know that is what makes Uni get it. I have her on Honest Kitchen which is a dehydrated raw food, and she is doing really well on it. They have several formulas. I also frequently visit http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com I love their site, it's really easy to understand why certain ingredients are good or bad. Just for fun I check out the one star foods. Maybe not for fun, for horror, but you know what I mean. If you have a PetSmart near you, there MUST be a Petco nearby too? Petco has more higher quality brands there now. I'm sure you can order online too. |
Haha Brit, how did I know you were going to be all over this? :D |
No Petco anywhere nearby. Closest town to me is Tupelo, and they only have a Petsmart. I'd have to go to Memhis or Jackson, MS, to get to a Petco and that is just too far :( We do have a Tractor Supply I believe. I will have to check there. Thanks. |

We've had good luck with Nature's Variety. We feed the Prairie formulas (grain inclusive) but their Instinct formulas are grain free. I buy it online at PetCareRX.com. They have very good prices and you get free shipping on all orders over $35. My maltese does have a little bit of tear staining though. Not sure if that is from the food, the grains in the food, or what. I've thought about trying the Instinct but haven't yet due to the high fat and protein contents. It is not too uncommon for dogs to have loose stools for a short time when switching foods, but that should stop after a short time. I avoid all foods made by Diamond now due to gas problems with all of them I've tried. This includes Diamond lines as well as other brands that they make for those companies, including Chicken Soup, Premium Edge, Diamond Naturals, Kirklands, Canidae, Solid Gold, Wellness. My dogs had the worst gas on any of those. We've had amost no gas at all with Nature's Variety. |
I have had no complaints with Halo. It is a four star dog food, and you can order directly from the website. If you join their newsletter, you get coupons every month. I have had no gas issues. |
Moses is on Nutro Ultra, it's a holistic food that comes highly recommended. He never has gas and has few eye goopies. You can find it at Petsmart and Petco. It's the only food he will eat, and he is still picky as all get-out! |

my dogs have always had tear staining with every food we tried EXCEPT for nature's variety. We also use the prairie kinds, the pieces are small and my dogs seem to enjoy it very much. The tearing is gone and improved the first week they were on it. |

We recently switched from Wellness to Nature's Variety. It is much smaller and grain free. The furbabies like it. Pam |
ZoE is on Blue Buffalo. She loves it & is doing great. |

I didn't realize eye crud was due to dog food. My daughter has been feeding Lily Purina One small bites and Lily had them. She had to go to the vet for dehydration and she's been on Hills I/D and she doesn't have them now. But I need to switch to something else. I'm going to try her on Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato canned food because of low fat, moisture, and it's supposed to be easily digestible. I'll watch for the eye crud.:dogprints:dogprints |

I think I may try a small bag of the TOTW Sierra Mountain formula. I had my guys on TOTW for almost a year and then discovered Jada had allergies to chicken. I tried her on the Pacific stream formula and it didn't agree with her tummy. I was at TSC last Sunday and was looking at the list of ingredients on the Sierra Mountain formula and I didn't see anything that I know bothers Jada. I am currently feeding Natural Balance LID sweet potato and venison and they do love it and are doing well on it. I just want to find something else that works good for them so I can rotate. I hope you have good luck with it:) |
I have teddie on Natural Balance sweet potato/Bison and he seems to be doing great. Because it is no-grain I give him carrots (organic), green beans, and several fruits to counter the imbalance. No eye boogers here...no tear staining either. There are so many great foods out there, we had trial and error on 6 bags before we found this one. I am still not convinced we won't have to try something else either...:p |

Did you know that there's a news that talks about one of the brands of cat food has been recalled because it was suspected with salmonella infection. When we talk about salmonella, symptoms occur like vomiting and diarrhea. In the news they mentioned that Nestle Purina PetCare Co. has recalled 870 bags of dry kitty food Monday because of possible salmonella infection. The cat food was offered in a few various states but may were dispersed further. Individuals dealing with the food or infected animals may also probably become infected. Here is the proof:Purina recalls cat food for possible salmonella contamination |
Nature's Variety?? Which one?? So I googled and went to Amazon. There's 20 different kinds! We've got a 9 week old morkie and a 35lb bag will last for months!! She's on Purina Beneful for Puppies as recommended by the breeder. Now I find out it's the worst of the worst! Makes me question the breeder... |
Dori stopped eating Wellness super5, so I went to Mud Bay for a free sample of TOTW. We chose the Pacific Stream with smoked Salmon. Now my little Diva does a happy chow dance. What a difference! |
My 2 have been on Wellness super 5 for a while now . I want to change them to something better . I am going to see if our local store has TOTW. That seems like a really good food. |
Changing Sophie to TOTW has been great. She loves it!!! Still mixing it with a bit of her Wellness Super 5 Mix until that is gone, but she will pick out her TOTW before eating the Wellness out of the bowl :) |
Can you please tell me what TOTW food is, I would like to try it for my 4. Is it small pieces? Thank you. |
Wellness didn't work for Kody either - gas and diarrhea - but he loved it. Went back to Royal Canine Yorkie. Sent an email to TOTW and they sent me nine 60z samples in different flavors to try. |

Frustrated! I just purchased Wellness Super 5 mix today! I researched it on the recommended website and it was a 5 star food. Just switched from natural Balance which is only 4 stars. Was excited to find Wellness at Petsmart. Now after reading these neg posts I feel like I messed up! Mylee will eat anything, but I would like her to have the "best". I guess I'll be dealing with gas and eye gunk, as well as looking for a new food! Aaaaaggggghhhhh! |
Not necessarily; Dori did well on Super Mix 5, just wasn't really enthusiastic about it. With the TOTW Pacific Salmon, she circles the food bowl. Don't give up on a good food until you see how your pooch responds. Dori had horrible gas on Origin and my vet said "too much protein." So we went to SM5 and, now TOTW. I want her to be enthusiastic about her chow and do the "happy dance" when she knows it is chow time. And, BTW, I just made the switch (didn't mix with old). No problems. |

For the price, you can't beat the food. I wouldn't say they are really small pieces but they're not very big either. They are smaller than Acana. I'm not sure what I could compare it to. I am feeding the lamb version right now (Sierra Mountain). |
