Steriods Some vets are saying they give steriods to Yorkies that have an allergic reaction. Is this safe? |
Allergic reactions to what? I think it depends what you are talking about. |
Steroids are drugs that are commonly used in allergic reactions. I am not sure if you mean reactions in general - bee stings, flea allergy, drug allergy?. |
Sorry I posted yesterday about childrens benedryl....She is scratching constantly but has no fleas and no dry skin. She eats Cesar sunrise wet food. She's been eating this food for 2yrs. I bathed her in oatmeal and gave her childrens benedryl last night but didn't seem help. |
There is a thread in the YT Library about allergies. That's a good place to start. Benadryl can be used for environmental allergies. It doesn't work for all dogs and it takes at least 10 days to judge whether there is a difference. If environmental allergies are suspected, then Atopica could be tried (or better yet, allergy testing and then allergy shots). Benadryl won't do a thing for food allergies. Steroids can help either, but they aren't the safest drugs and so it's best to avoid long-term use if possible. Some give a steroid shot to try to break the itch cycle and see what happens. You can do a steroid pill like Temaril-P long-term, but actually figuring out what the problem is (elimination diet if a food allergy is suspected or allergy testing and shots if environmental is suspected) are usually preferred. Benadryl 2-3 times a day for at least 10 days (vet should have said how often to give it). If no improvement, vet time, and if she is really miserable now, then vet time now to go get some relief. So to answer your question, yes, steroids are used for allergies. They tend to be very effective, but should not replace a proper diagnosis. |
My dad has a pug that is on steroids for allergies and he is now about 15 lbs overweight, which we all know is unhealthy so they are working very hard to get the weight back off him. Because of this weight gain when the vet diagnosed my dog with food allergies we refused the steroids and instead monitor her diet to keep her allergies under control. When Gabby was diagnosed with her allergies she had been eating the same food for about 10 months before it started bothering her & she began getting the same symptoms u described along with itchy ears. We were told that foods with a slew of ingredients (meat, veggies, and grains) are not good for dogs with food allergies, so I would def do more research on what she's eating, if this is your baby's problem, medications may not be necessary, just a change in her diet. Also she could just have dry skin & VET Solutions shampoo is great for that! |
