how to get my brand new, very picky yorkie to eat?!
 
Hi everyone!
I just got my new yorkie on Sunday- but I'm not new to the breed- my last yorkie passed away a couple months ago at the age of 15 (she was a rescue) my new yorkie is a 1 year old female named Tiana who came from a very friendly, yorkie-savvy family that is local to me. She is sweet and well-adjusted, but I'm struggling to get her to eat! She'll eat a few bites here& there, but won't eat more than that. I've tried wet food, dry food (both the kind she was eating in her last home & 2 new kinds), soaking her food in chicken broth, warming it, breaking it into pieces, feeding her small quantities of meat... but nothing has been overly successful! She is going to the bathroom normally & is active & happy, im just stumped as to what to do in order to get her eating a regular diet! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Well if you have tried so many things could she have a tooth that is bothering her. I would try some chicken. But if she is not eating the food she use to something may be up.

This is just a guess on my part ... depending on how long she was with her previous owners, perhaps she is simply sad and misses them. My Toto is going to be 8 yrs. next month and we have had her since she was 16 weeks. Over the years she has had periods when she didn't want to eat and we rushed her to our vet ... we were always told [after determining that there were no physical problems] when they are hungry, the will eat! I would leave kibble or whatever she is used to available and just see if she will finally eat? Good luck and I hope there is nothing wrong that would cause her to refuse food!

:thumbup: I agree, she is probably just adjusting to her new home. She will eat when she is hungry. Choose one food and stick to it. If she was free-fed before, leave the food down all day. If she had scheduled feedings, put the food down at that time and take it up after 20-30 minutes. Don't keep offering her alternatives.

Try trick training or games. If she knows any commands like sit, stay, down, play with her and reward her with a kibble. If she doesn't know those commands, start working with her.
