Dental Health, or dentures! My baby gets NO junk. I feed her a teensie teaspoon of FreshPet Select morning an evening, with kibble out all day. I brush her teeth every other day and provide her with denta stix and chew stix. Her teeth seem to manufacture tarter. I hate to have her put under for dental cleaning due to her size (3lbs). Is there anything else I can do to prevent dental problems? Thank You in advance. |
My Sugar is the same. I just spent almost $900 on a spay and dental and immunizations for her. A week later? Tartar! I brush daily and use a sealant. I also use a Sonicare toothbrush (newer addition to her routine) that is working wonders!! Some dogs are prone to periodontal disease. Sugar is 3 pounds as well. |
There are a ton of rinses, gels, sprays, and water additives that you can try, but the majority of them are either not proven or there are concerns around ingredients. Brush daily, preferably with an enzymatic toothpaste. OraVet weekly. Dentals as needed. That is what I do and it has worked well. Yorkies are prone to oral problems. Requiring dentals every year is very common. Some could really use one every 3-6 months. The anesthesia risk is lower than the risk of letting dental disease get out of control and affect the organs. |

That is what I do Crystal.....yet tartar forms within hours. Also....my vet (and most others I have Googled) say brush OUTSIDE of teeth only. I did this. The result? Brown goo on all of the inner surfaces 2 months later (first time I looked....) !!! |
I think sometimes it's just genetic and can't really be helped. Jackson's teeth are far from terrible, but he does have some tarter build up on his four canine teeth. I can't really tell if it's just staining or actual tarter.... but anyways I'm really bad about brushing his teeth. I've been getting better (once a week) but it used to be less than that. I bought ProDen PlaqueOff a little over a month ago now, I think, and noticed a big difference. You just sprinkle a bit on their food and most of the tarter/staining came off, and I've scraped some off with my fingers now too. I also use Petzlife gel once a week and rub it along his gums. That, along with chewing Himalayan Chews and Bully Sticks seems to help a TON! He will be 3 this year and all his teeth, except the canines, are pearly white. |

I'm trying to get my boys to use the Sonic Care, but I haven't successfully gotten either one to keep it in their mouth while running. |
I recently just bought an oral spray that is supposed to fight against tarter. The brand is Petzlife- Dog Dental Care, Pet Teeth Cleaning Products - PetzLife I have heard great things about it and hope so see results on my boys myself. I am having some trouble getting them use to the " Spray " effect of it. It seems to scare them. They also have a gel formula available that I am now thinking maybe would have been easier to use on them. Best of all, the ingredients are all natural. I spent about $25 on my bottle. A bit pricey, but if it works, its worth every penny! Along with using the oral spray I brush their teeth about every other night. If anyone else has used Petzlife, I would love to hear if anyone has seen results with the product! |
Petzlife works wonders for Taycie! I use this as needed, Usually once a week. I brush twice daily with C.E.T toothpaste, usually after she eats breakfast and right before bed. Her teeth look great with this routine so far:) |

This just happens sometimes. Some Yorkies could use a cleaning every 3 months. You can try flossing. Brush twice a day. The outside only thing is because that is where the majority of the tartar builds up in dogs. That is where a dental cleaning is focused. Most dogs will get much less on the insides. Also, there is more of a biting hazard to do the insides and a lack of acceptance from the pet. That said, I do the insides and dont' recommend that they are skipped in Yorkies unless it's a safety issue for you. You could also add something like MaxiGuard in if you are comfortable with the zinc content. |

She HATES the inside of her teeth brushed  but I hate dental bills more so I'm willing to "fight" her. She does fine with the noise of the sonicare, BTW |
