Teddy vs ticks: a mini rant The ticks can't stay away from Teddy. I know he smells good and he probably tastes good, but I wish they would leave Teddy alone. Seems like I pull one off him every day. Yesterday, I had to remove 2 large ones from his head and 1 small one from his leg. We are experiencing an unusually wet spring and the ticks are rampant. Grrr. Anyone else fighting ticks this year? |
What tick preventative do you use? |
Frontline |
Sorry you're having such a horrible tick year and wish I knew of some magic solution. At the beginning of spring we had several ticks on the dogs and even a couple on us. Dh treated our yard with flea and tick granules and although ticks seem to be gone now, the fleas weren't affected much at all. |
No, btw, we don't have a tick issue here as long as we're not hanging out in the woods, thankfully. Have you thought about just going with the permethrin, esp. since Virginia probably has its fair share of tick borne illness cases? |

We spray our yard and don't have ticks, but the boys pick them up in our neighbors' grass (near the edge of the road) on our walks. I can't figure out why Teddy attracts them and Max hasn't this spring. |
I know it's yucky stuff :( , but tick borne illness is no fun, and the rate at which he is picking them up leaves him wid open to it. You could try Revolution (although I wouldn't trust it for heartworms). Preventix collar for walks (but I know so many people are scared to use things like this - it would be something to ask the vet about though). Or permethrin... If they can tolerate it.. If you're already spraying the yard, then I just don't know. :( Have you tried walking them on a paved trail? |
Yep, last year, Frontline did absolutely nothing for us. He has been on Frontline for the past 3 months though with luckily no problems. I had 3 tubes of it so wanted to use it up and not waste it and luckily, we just used our last one up two weeks ago. There was a period of about a week where I did not apply it and it had been over 30 days since last application and I found a tick on the rim of his eye! Yuck! So I put the last tube of Frontline on him that night and all has been good since. So for some reason, it's been working thus far. However I just placed an order for K9 Advantix for the next 3 months. Last year though he got ticks galore even when on Frontline... once we switched to Advantix, I saw NONE! |

My nephew, 3, had a tick in his head my DS just happened to feel on Sunday...not a good sign already & he doesn't play in the woods. Is there an easy way you check your yorkies? Wet or dry or with a comb or anything? Obviously they're very hard to see on the little furballs. |

Don't try flushing or washing down a drain. The tick will come back. You can do it. :) The really gross ones are the engorged ones. Thank goodness I have only ever found one of those. |

It was highly traumatizing! lol. But I do think my "maternal" instincts would kick in if I felt Princess was in danger & I'd do what had to be done. Thanks for telling me about the alcohol. I had to keep mine as I had a big welt, but it was ok.:) |
Zeke is another tick magnet. I was pulling at least one a day, sometimes two on top of each other. Finally had the yard treated and keep the gang away from bushes, tall grasses on our walks. The ticks seem to have gone but not wanting to see the fleas. Especially on Zeke with his flea bite allergy. I heard that applying Olive Oil on the tick will smother it then you can carefully pull it out intact. |
