Unsure the vet says my little almost 4yr. old Zoe has allergies, that cause her to reverse sneeze, have anxiety and over anxious "spells" and she has been rattling in her breathing for a few minutes after a spell. anyone else having these issues?? |
Hi. Just to make sure, you might want to check the pup's gums during these attacks, especially if you are hearing rattling sounds or she is having anxiety. Her gums and tongue should be pink. If turning blue or purple, she is having trouble getting oxygen. If so, she should go to vet ASAP. The spells might just be upsetting to her, but in human med we always worry about CO2 buildup (difficulty getting O2) when we see anxiety with difficulty breathing. The ppl on this site w vet med exp could probably help you w reversed sneezing, how to tell if that's what you have - we don't have this in human med, so I'm not very helpful there. |
thanks, i will sure do that, she has done this for quite a spell, but never as much as the last 2 days, |
Have chest xrays been done? If not, that's the minimum I would be doing in this case... Reverse sneezing can usually be stopped by putting a finger over pup's nose for a second or two. |
no they havent, when she was checked, her lungs were clear, there was no rattling, she was in great health, and she started the reverse sneezing right before we left, and the vet then said it was allergies and i give her benadryl 2x a day and a pill to take 1, for 4 days, |
One of my Morkies has reverse sneezing episodes about once a day, usually due to excitement, and my other 3 dogs have it rarely. But, all 3 Morkies have had RS at the same time, due to drywall dust. I imagine allergens (dust, pollen etc.) could contribute, but might be hard to treat. Since RS isn't life threatening and is usually resolved in minutes, I personally would be reluctant to treat with meds, unless it is literally happening all the time. It is sad to see them honking away though, and with Karlee I sometimes lift her head up and gently stroke her neck to help her relax and stop. When other people see her in RS, they think she is choking and want to do a rescue maneuver. |
It's up to you how careful you want to be. My girl reverse sneezes too, but her breathing never rattles. If it did, I'd go ahead with a chest xray to make sure everything is okay in there. There is a chance that if it's environmental allergies, that the Benadryl will help. |
I have a shih tzu that once in a while will have reverse sneezing. I have read that it is common in these type of breeds, dogs with the smooshed in faces. I hate that honking sound too. It does not last long. And comes out of knowhere. My yorkie has never had this issue though. Both my 2 are nearly the same size, and the yorkie weighs more. It could be allergy related. But the shih tzu hardly ever has this problem sneezing. Thankfully it is not a common experience with her. |
Jada has allergies and she reverse sneezes at times. It usually just lasts a few seconds and if I pat her nose and rub her throat it stops, blowing in her nose works too. I have been spring cleaning this week and when I was moving furniture and getting the dust from behind stuff she was really bad. The dust really made her reverse sneezing worse that day. It stopped as soon as I was through cleaning and stirring up dust. She has never rattled when she does it. |
