heartworm preventative I need some suggestions on what others use for a heartworm preventative? Where I live their are not any mosquitoes , but this is scary to me, I do not want to take a chance for any of my 2small dogs to get heartworm. Flies are more of a problem then any other type of Bugs. Their is no pools or standing water where I live either. But I still want to protect them from this deadly illness. What is the safest meds? One that is for dogs under 10 pounds ? I have not ever evenhad problems with fleas either. my 2 are 2, and 3 years old. |
We use Advantage multi, it is for heartworm and fleas. My dogs are 6 - 16 lbs. |
We use Sentinel. It's a once a month tablet for heartworm and fleas. |
I use Iverhart. It's basically the generic brand of Heartguard but we get it from the vet. |
Sammy takes Interceptor, once a month, all year long. |
My 2 get Sentinel. Calvin is 6-7lbs, so he gets the 2-10lb dosage, and Chase is 14ish lbs, so he gets the 11-25lb :) We give it year round without problems :) |

All of mine take Sentinel once a month. |
I'm flipping between Interceptor and Sentinel. Depends on what I have on hand, if fleas are active, my mood at the time, how much I feel like spending. |
Is it safer to consult our vet, and give them what he suggests? Are the above meds all over the counter? Are theiir any side effects to these meds you have to watch for? And are these medications expensive ? If you give a pill once a month for a year and have 2 dogs , approx. what would this cost? |
I use intercepter once a month. Callie takes it with no problems. |

None of these drugs are over the counter. They are sold by vets after a heartworm test is performed (usually not considered a good idea to give some preventatives if it's possible that the dog is heartworm positive). Annual testing should be done if a dog is on heartworm preventative. Yes, all drugs have side effects. There might be a list on the package insert. Relatively speaking, they are generally considered safe. They are not too expensive. If I had two dogs on Interceptor year-round, it would be about $110 plus testing which is $25 (here anyway) give or take per dog. |
Mine take interceptor year round. Although I have been considering switching to Sentinel- still need to do some research on that though. Have been using interceptor for close to 4 years now with no issues. |
I use heartguard for mine. |
