Its Gross but true, my pup eating feces and running around the yard with it! Hi All, Rudy was in our yard which is rather big and there must have been poop from my older dog still in the yard that was not picked up and he had it in his mouth running like a mad man in his glory with it in his mouth. I was sooo mad trying to catch him to get rid of it. It takes a good 20 minutes to catch this little guy yorkies are real fast. I know I heard this is common in pups has anyone experienced this with your yorky and does it stop hopefully soon. He puts everything in his mouth. Thanks Denise :animal-pa |
Yes, your not alone. Thor at 5 months loves cat poop (when visiting my mothers house with inconsiderate neighbours) and at first like you I chased him around the yard. He thought that was the best game ever. So I started working on the leave it command. Now when it looks like he is going for something I tell him leave it and he does! It's not 100% of the time but it's much better than before. I hope he totally out grows it but I dont think they ever do. Good luck. |
Yeah. My Lucy used to do the same thing when she was a puppy. She would eat Ringo's poop OR play with it. YUCK. But she did eventually grow out of it. NOW, however, she is OCD about the goose poop we encounter on our walks. She would eat it if I gave her the opportunity! My sweet, dainty little Lucy! Doesn't seem possible. |
Norman does this also. He is 4 months old and likes to eat our older dogs' *stuff*. Then he wants to give us big kisses - gross!!! |
Dogs can be so gross sometimes can't they?:p There's something you can buy at a pet store to stop that, one brand I know of is called DisTaste (there are others though). It's a powder you put in the dog's food and it makes the poop taste really bad to them (how it possibly tastes good in the first place I don't know:p). I've given it to my cats to stop my dogs from "snacking" out of the litter box - worked like a charm by the second day;). You usually only have to use it a few days and they get the picture pretty fast. You may have to repeat every once in a while if you notice the habbit coming back, depends on how determined your dog is though;). If it's only the other dog's poo he'll eat, feed it to the other dog. |

The only problem is that stuff they eat to make it distasteful for them must be measured for the safe dose and it is hard when they are so small. Poo eating is awful and so disappointing. We just think our pups are so much better than that, but alas, they're not.:( Nothing worse than getting ready to give kisses to your pup and get a whiff of that breath.:eek: |
I only have a problem with Neo eating poop when DH and I take the boys for a walk. Connor doesn't seem interested, but to Neo--snack time!:eek: He is so fast at scarfing it up, that I can't allow him to stop and sniff anything along the way, except for sign posts, hydrants, etc. At home there is never a problem. Probably because I feed both the same thing. |

We went through that with Dudley and then he finally stopped. I have never had a dog do that and I have had dogs all my life. All this time I thought FINALLY, we are through this and then this morning????? I walk in and find him chopping down on Kayla's poop. Oh, gag-a-r00, I don't know what makes them do it. My dh thinks it is something lacking in their diet. But, our dogs are bought the best food, they are on good supplements. Sooooo, I don't know. If you find the answer let me know. When Dudley was doing it at puppy stage his breeder told me to just clap real loud and say NO, NO. They will back off from it but it didn't stop him. |

Oh, I forgot about pinapple :) i have heard this works well too, someone else will have to direct you on how much to give though. I can't get my cats to eat pineapple (lol) so I use Forbid powder (this is the only one I found that's safe for cats so it may be the safest one for small dogs too) Here are the active ingredients of "Forbid": Purified vegetable protein fraction and sodium glutamate. You can try the pineapple first though :) |
My son's dog did that for a while but he would go outside with him every time and tell him "Leave It" when he turned to get it and when the dog backed off, treated and praised and soon trained him not to do it. Plus, he picked up the poop right away after the dog would back off. Soon the dog was trained to poop and go away from it. Later, my son would leave the poop a while and watch him for possible return and if he did, tell him, "Leave It" and treat. Before too long, he just avoided it altogether and lost interest as he grew up. |
I have tried everything and nothing works except training, which is still a work in progress. We tried pineapple, spinach, Dis-Taste and honestly I can't remember what else. He eats his own poop as well as Cooper's. If I'm around, which is most of the time I can tell him to leave it and he will. But I must be standing there. There are times during the day when he will sneak off quietly, purposely and discreetly to another room to do the deed. Quote:
