A good low calorie food! Since moving to Florida its so hot and Laci HATES long walks here, so she has gained a pound, does anyone know of a good quality food that is low fat? I just went and got some organic fresh green beans for treats but would like to switch her to a low calorie food, is summer here and well over 90* I dont want her unhealthy! |
Wellness CORE reduced fat comes to mind. Natural Balance also has a lowcal food. But I prefer to just lower the amount of the current food they are on. |
Many of the reduced fat foods/ reduced calorie foods are not the best ingredient wise. What I did when I was trying to get Chloe to lose weight was to only give her 50% of her dog food. Then in the slow cooker I put boneless skinless chicken breasts and tons of veggies and covered it with water- cook for 8 hours on low, then I put it all in the food processor. I gave her a scoop of this mixture with her food. |
I have one of mine of the LA low fat Life's Abundance Weight Loss Food for Dogs |

I have done this a few times and will pretty much use any veggie- if I have some fresh ones laying around that are going to go bad I will throw them in, or I will just buy a bag of frozen ones. Green Beans, Carrots, Peas, Broccoli, Squash. |
I had really good luck with the Natural Balance Reduced Calorie. Actually my late Molly who had Chronic Pancreatitis and IBD did really well on this food for her last 4 years before she passed. It was low in fat content enough for her. |
Uni has mild pancreatitis and I have her on Honest Kitchen Preference which is veggie only and about 7% fat and I add in my own skinless chicken breast or whitefish. She loves it. She has had zero problems after switching to this food. |

You can try walks at night or in the early morning. As for a low calorie food, you could just feed less of her current kibble or look at one of the weight management options that Wellness (and maybe others) offers. |

That would actually be a great idea (that I may try with my Beagle;))! The Preference is veggies and some fruit and whole grains only (plus minerals and vitamins) and you add your own meat:) As far as I've noticed, most of the good foods start lacking ingredient wise when it comes to their "weight management" or low fat or low calorie formulas (they have a tendancy to just put more grains in and cut down on meat, which won't help your cause or necessarily be healthy). You're other option is keep the food you use now, but cut back and add pulverized veggies. You could also look for a food that has lamb or fish as the protein source, as far as I know, those are lower in fat and calories without having to go the "weight management food" route. You can look on the bag you have now and note the k/cals per cup, then take a trip to the pet store and read the labels comparing them to yours and get one with less calories per cup:) |

Uni had a problem with lamb before. I think it was too rich, not necessarily too fatty, so don't know if anyone else's pup would have a pancreatitis flare up from it either. |

I use lamb in rotation and never had a problem, guess it depends on the dog though:) |
My jack russell/rat terrier gained weight on acana and wasnt doing well with the fish, he got hives. SO i switched him to Wellness super mix chicken, and he lost alot of weight. |
