SO who do I believe? OK, The vet told me that Izzy's diarrhea is best treated by starving her for a whole day! I cant do this in good conscience do that without talking to my breeder. She, on the other hand told me that Izzy should have a combination of full fat cottage cheese, full fat yogurt, and her regular food. (Fromm duck and sweet potato) I am ready to pull my hair out. I havent had a full nights sleep in forever! Lots of different reasons for this, but now its all about getting up every couple of hours so she can go poop. I feel so bad for her! Thanks for any input! CHristopher See my previous post for the background info. Thanks! |
How old is she? What has been tried so far? What has been ruled out? I would not do what the breeder suggested. Depending on size and age, I wouldn't have a problem with what hte vet suggested. I know it seems extreme to some, but if a bland diet isn't working, sometimes their intestines really do need a rest. BTW, I've been told it is okay to do this and have done it. As long as an adult Yorkie isn't prone to hypoglycemia, one day without food will almost never cause an issue. |
Crystal, this is his previous post: Izzy eats lots of stuff off the ground and as a result now has lungworm, hookworm and roundworm. What am I to do? I brought her to the vet of course. She is playing the stubborn game with me about not liking her dry food. She wants her baby carrots, and lots of treats. so I have to control those and wait until she is really hungry to eat her food. I have ben giving her Fromm puppy gold, which is now almost gone, so I am also looking for what I should give her next. SHe is 7 months and 7 lbs. THanks!!! |
Izzy GIRL 6 Months She is 7 months. I appreciate your opinion about fasting her. If she is not better tomorrow, I might try it. She is ready to eat wall paper so it wont be easy! Nothing has been ruled out yet. She has never been tested for hypoglycemia. By bland diet do you mean boiled hamburger and rice? Thanks |
Have you tried giving her a teaspoon or so of plain, canned pumpkin? Usually stops diarrhea quickly. I have fasted adults for 24 hours, but sometimes I cheat and only do it for about 12 hours. If it doesn't work, then feed her and start over and go for 24. I think you would have trouble finding full fat anything in the stores, I couldn't for the past 2 years as I wanted it for my SD. Is she being treated for the worms? How long has she had diarrhea? I'd be worried about dehydration. Are her gums pink and moist? I would change food gradually in case the Fromms is giving her the diarrhea. And ask your vet about putting her on a probiotic as that can help too. |
Hmm. When were the worms diagnosed and what has been used to treat the problem? If you aren't positive that the worms are gone, then that is the first concern - not fasting. Worms cause diarrhea. Lung worms too?? |
I have fasted Taycie before and within 24 hours she is back to normal. I keep nutrical on hand and make sure she is drinking and staying hydrated. My vet also recommended fasting as well when her stomach is a mess. One particular event I gave her 95% salmon with her dog food that morning for breakfast.Just a tablespoon. Well, It gave her the runs like I have never seen! It was awful:( I ended up doing many butt baths that day, poor thing. I decided not to feed her that night and just let her tummy rest. By the next morning she ate and all things were back to normal. Poop was back to normal and that was that. And, I threw the can of salmon out.. I am sure was glad:) |
I know big dogs are different, but I've fasted Duke before. I've also used pumpkin and the cooked chicken/rice. I've found that pumpkin works best for Duke. |
Hope your baby gets well soon. That would worry me to death about the worms. Didn't they treat her for that at the vets. It almost sounds like to me in your post that she eats alot of treats and other things first before her regular food. Her food is more important than treats. I know sometimes ours have had upset tummies just from carrots. They always eat their dinner or not treats, but, I'm just saying sometimes the treats can upset them. |
Thanks everyone! I uess my writing wasnt clear. She has indeed been treated for the worms. I fasted her for the day today then gave her the boiled chicken and rice. She seems to feel better but we will see! Thanks for all your concern and thoughts, I appreciate them. Also, I am open to finding a new food for her that can be purchased locally. The Fromm is not looking good in that regard. At this rate, I may just cook for her.... |
Jovi had vomiting and diarrhea last week - the vet said withhold water for 6hrs (give her some pancake syrup on her gums - prevents hypoglycemia - then give her food (boiled rice and chicken in the am for 24 hrs) - then slowly reintroduce her regular food. She also said to give her 1/4 of a 10ml pepcid pill 2x a day for 3 days - seemed to work - she is better. |
Hope your pup feels better soon! |
