Exposed to a puppy with worms I started dogsitting a 14 week old rescue puppy (Boston Terrier/Beagle mix) last Monday and Jackson came with me every day last week and played with him mainly inside, but we went for quick 5-10 minute on leash walks too. The owner informed me that the vet told her this weekend the puppy tested positive for hook and roundworms. Should I be concerned for Jackson? He was around him all week for about an hour an day. He is on Iverhart Heartworm preventative (which says it's for heartworm prevention and "to treat and control ascarid and hookworms in dogs"). He was never around his poop or anything but did not know if there were other ways to catch it. Do you think I should get him on a dewormer anyways? I'm not really sure what the protocol is. |
No, the HW Tx will take care of it. You only need dewormer for worms not killed by the HW product, like tapeworms. :D |
Ascarids are roundworms and it covers those and hooks. No reason to use another dewormer, especially if he wasn't around the pup's poop. If you are concerned, another dewormer wouldn't hurt though (or a fecal check). I would do nothing in this case. |
Thanks guys! :) I figured it'd be okay, just wanted to be certain. |
Ascarid means roundworms, so Jackson should be covered:) He would have had to ingest the puppy's poop, eaten soil or grass that the puppy had recently pooped on, licked the puppies butt (lol, but we know dogs do this) or walked through an area that the puppy pooped at and then licked his paws. Because of the heartworm rx, I'd say Jackson was well protected, but if you want to be 100% sure, have your vet check his stool sample in a few days and then again in about 2 weeks. I wouldn't use a dewormer since he's on that rx which may have the same active ingredient that would be in a dewormer. |
LOL, I love when I'm posting at the same time as someone else and saying basically the same thing:D |
