picky eater. charly is almost 5 months old. not long after we had him, we figured out he is hypoglycemic (diabetic). I have to make sure he eats well, and hes such a picky eater that we put him on a mostly meat diet. turkey, chicken, etc.. Except now hes getting bored and wont eat it for the most part. Im running out of options, as theres not much else out there to feed him. he refuses to eat almost anything, especially dry food. if you have any suggestions, that would be great! :confused: :animal-pa |
Have you tried canned dog foods? That seems to go over better for these little picky ones. I mix canned in with Alice's kibble and that works for her. I also had to try a few differnt kibbles and found that she likes Orijen and Nature's variety the best (especially the Orijen, I think because it's grain-free and smells stronger). Another thing I have to do is let Alice eat her food off the kitchen floor (she will not eat out of a bowl no matter what's in there). I also aclimated her to a schedual; at meal times, I made her stay in a corner of the kitchen with her food until she ate it, otherwise, she'd sniff it and go wandering around the house sniffing around for something better? Did your vet diagnose diabetes? Hypoglycemic episodes are really common in these small breed puppies, but it doesn't mean they have diabetes. They just can have a situation when they haven't eaten recently when their blood sugar level drops low because they're so small. It's typically something that won't effect them as they get older and bigger though:D |
Oh,forgot:) - it's fine to give him meat with his dog food, but meat alone doesn't have all the vitamins and minerals that a good quality dog food does, so if you want to go the route of using people food, you'll have to look up a vet nutritionist for recipies to make sure his diet is well balanced and he's getting everything he needs.:D |
You may be giving him too many options therefore making him more picky. I would choose a good quality food and just start putting out a bowl- a healthy dog will not starve themselves, when he is hungry he will eat. |
Some things that might work: Plain yogurt. I mix a tiny bit with the food. Sometimes I just drizzle the liquid that stays at the top when you buy the big containers of yogurt. Cheese. It can be sprinkled throughout the food. Don't just dump it on top otherwise the cheese will be the only thing that gets eaten :p Fish oil. My dog goes CRAZY for Grizzly's Salmon Oil. I use this a few times a week and just put half a pump on the kibble and then shake the bowl around so the oil covers all the kibble. Chicken broth. I use a low sodium chicken broth and just drizzle it over. I'm sneaky and I dilute it with water so it's really just like 1/4 broth and 3/4 water that my dog gets in her food. ;) Canned food. Sometimes I mix in canned food with the kibble. It's just annoying and smelly so I don't do it often. My dog loves it though! Eggs. If I do this I don't mix in a ton, just enough so the scent/flavor is there. Hope one of these suggestions works! I know how frustrating a picky eater can be! |
