Making it on my own... So, after much discussion with the DH, we have decided that we're going to try out cooking stuff for Gizmo. I had some all natural chicken breast, canola oil, and cooked some chicken tenders. Then, I added a little bit of Parmesan cheese, Gizmo's favorite, in with it and put it in th food processor. After is was all processed down, I made sure the food was warm, not hot. I placed it down in front of Gizmo and he gobbled it down. This was a big relief, especially considering he hasn't eaten well in awhile. Anywho, after this wonderful food eating dream, I went out and bought some brown rice, carrots, and chicken stock/broth that I found that actually had no onions in it. I made extra and it's in my fridge, waiting to be microwaved tomorrow and given for breakfast. I actually did the adding up for all the ingredients it took for me to make his food vs. the pet food kibble, and I'm actually saving money since I use additional food that I already use to cook with anyway. Whatever gets the little dude to eat. The whole three days without eating was too terrifying. Wish me luck! |

Aww, I bet he loves it. :) It sounds like you're doing this long-term, so: Processed broth probably shouldn't be an ingredient. Even low sodium may be too salty. After he eats solely homecooked for awhile, you'll be able to see what his wright is doing. Homecooked fed pups usually need quite a bit more volume than what they would eat in kibble because it's full of waer. So you would have to feed more which is when you may see that it really is expensive... Vitamins and minerals have to be added. The recipe has to be balanced. An unbalanced diet can cause very serious health problems. Usually it is recommended that a veterinary nutritionist does this. There are also a couple websites where you can buy balanced recipes (petdiets.com and balanceit.com). When possible, choose lower fat recipes for Yorkies. I'm thinking Gizmo is an adult? If this is a pup, only a consult with a nutritionist would do. |
