Administering Ear infection med ~ Help ~Suggestions? Bella has been battling an ear infection. She absolutely HATES when I put, well I "should" say attempt to put the medicine in her ear. The moment she sees the bottle......she outsmarts me wiggling & moving her head in my arms. Yes, I've even tried my dh holding her while I administer the meds & vice versa. Even attempted to use the softee cone collar from Bo. Any suggestions? What do some of you do that have a wiggler? She's really good about anything else besides this. |
Hmm. I have a wiggler and I honestly just use force. I think that's all you can do unless you want to take her to the vet daily and have them do it (and if she is like that, they will also use force). When Ellie is being wiggly for ears, I stand or lay her on my lap with her side against my stomach. Then I put my arm (my right arm since I'm right handed) on her other side and hold her tightly against me. I hold her ear and head with my other hand and squirt it in. The only thing I really can't do is use an electric toothbrush. If your girl gets as upset about this med than Ellie does aboutt that, then I'd say there is no possible way to do it. lol. Have you tried wrapping her in a blanket? since it only takes a second, I think you'll be able to restrain. Or (although it won't be popular on YT :) ) you can put her harness on her and carefully lift her front feet off the ground while the other person puts it in. She probably won't be able to wiggle as much with less control. |
Lexie is the same way, I have to put ear cleaner in her ears after her bath and as soon as she spots me reaching for the bottle she starts climbing up my chest to escape. One thing I've heard is to put her on a counter or table and have someone hold her, she'd be less likely to run. Lexie's ear drops are really watery so while holding her in one arm I take a small cotton ball and soak it with solution then sqeeze it in both ears, massage the ear and she's done. She doesn't find cotton ball threatning. |
Tibbe loves training and doing tricks so much, I tell him "Stay", and despite how he hates getting his ear cleaning solution, he will shudder, "close" up his ears, etc., but will stay still as best he can. He'd rather perform his "trick" more than he hates getting that stuff in his ears! I just have a ham and as long as he thinks he is involved in performing a trick, I can get him to do a lot of things. I started training him to do this when he had an ear mite infection and he had to have regular cleaning and meds twice daily. If your dog is not big into training, it might not work, though. Hoe you find something that help! Good luck. |
Thank you both! I'm going to try wrapping her in a blanket, but it's mainly her "head" that she outsmarts me with wiggling. She is intimidated by the bottle & who can blame her, right......her ear already hurts.:( I've tried not letting her see the bottle, but she's tooo smart for Mommie.:p You are right, the cotton ball doesn't bother her as much. |
When cleaning Remy's ears, I sit on the floor on my knees. I put him between my thighs, with his back to me - and he is in sitting position. This helps to contain him. I have never had luck trying to get him to lay down for this. He sits just fine though. Food for thought. Good luck to you! |

Have you tried sneaking up on her when she's sleeping? Or keeping the drops in your pocket so you can give them at any point you catch her unaware of what your doing? Honestly I'm with Crystal on this one and just use force when I have to do things to an animal for its own good. Morgan is good for me and i can do anything to her, even if she doesn't like it. On little dogs that don't like ear meds what I do is use my left hand to grab their scruff. I hold on to it with my pink, ring, and middle finger. Then I use my index and thumb to hold the ear if needed. I'll hold the dog up against my body if needed as well. With my right hand i'll administer the drops. This takes only a few seconds and its over with. |
