Food question regarding "gas" Ok, this is kinda gross, but Alice seems really gasy and the odor is really yucky:p She seems uneffected by it LOL but when she's laying on my lap and in the car, ummm, well you know;). She's currently on Orijin puppy dry and Evenger's canned - beef and liver. After trying a few diferent foods (Verus and Merrick kibble and numerous different canned) I found that she likes this combo. and eats it without much coaxing:rolleyes:. Do any of you who have fed these find this "gas" issue with your dogs? It doesn't seem to upset her tummy at all and her poops are normal though. Wondering if it's just the adjustment period or the food itself (I'm tending to think it's the liver in the Evenger's? or is the fact that I'm doing grain free causing it?) This experimenting with different foods thing is driving me nuts lol. Never had to work so hard to figure out what to feed one of my pets lol, so just wondering if anyone has had this issue and found a good solution or has an idea for me before I start going crazy again trying to find something she'll eat. She's been on these two foods for about 2 weeks or so. Thanks:D |
I am no expert and trying to remember Anatomy class, but isn't gas normally formed in the stomach in relation to the production of stomach acid used to digest food? It could be this food is harder to digest than cereal-filled foods that are overprocessed, etc., and more stomach acid is being made and if your dog is not really active enough to move the gas along through the GI tract, it sort of accumulates so that you smell it as it slowly passes. We all know the reasons for abnormal gas such as ulcers, obstruction, etc., but this sounds like normal gas under the circumstances to me. |
Sounds very excessive and could indicate that there is some pain and/or discomfort in there. If it's happening often, I would try to find out why. |
Thanks:) It's not constant or necessarily frequent and she definatly doesn't seem to be in any pain at all, but she goes for her Rabies vacc. in 2 days so I'll bring it up to the vet. I'm pretty sure it may just end up getting blamed on the grain-free diet so I was just wondering if there's any validity to that? There's no loose stool, no vomiting, no noisy belly, nothing at all that would indicate an actual problem or any discomfort. It's also more common when we get in the car - excitement? My other dogs are fed Verus which has whole grains in it and I don't see this with them, so just curious if the Orijen could in fact be the culprit. Maybe it's just normal and I'm being nerotic:rolleyes: |
Odd -- Jackson has never in his life been a gassy dog, EVER. But when I tried him on Orijen Adult, phew, he was stinky. He was fine on Orijen Regional Red in that respect (no gas) but the Adult was a different story. I'm not sure why but no other food has caused him to have gas. |
Foods make a difference. For instance, our dogs (some of them) were VERY gassy on any food made by Diamond, including Diamond Naturals, Premium Edge, Chicken Soup, TOTW, Solid Gold, Canidae, Wellness. Yes, Diamond makes the dry foods for several brands, even many brands that Diamond does not own. One of the better foods I have found is Nature's Variety. My dogs have very little gas on this food and have done great on it. It is also an all life stages food so it works well for the puppies too. Our last 2 dogs have eaten Nature's Variety ever since we got them. We use mostly the Prairie formulas. The kibble is small and easy for the smaller dogs to eat also. You can also try giving your dog(s) a spoonful of plain yogurt. That can help their digestive systems and reduce the gas some. That's what I did to get through the bags of the Diamond made foods. It did help. |

Thanks:) I'm really familiar with Nature's Variety actually, the vet I used to work for sold it and I fed it to my dog and cats for a long time until we got our Akita and it gave her loose stools as a puppy. I then switched everybody to Verus but when I got Alice and started her on their puppy formula, she stopped eating it after a few days:rolleyes: so that's how she ended up on Orijen. Their Prairie kibble was actually next on my list to try with Alice, but then she liked the Orijen so we didn't get that far:rolleyes: but now of course, the gassy issue LOL. I do have a coupon for NV too, so maybe we'll try that and see if it makes a difference:) I really like that their dry food is coated in the freeze dried raw too and that may actually help with her "pickyness". I was actually considering switching all 3 dogs back to that beacuse right now I'm having to buy 3 different foods (puppy, senior, and adult) so 1 big bag for everybody would be nice:) Yogurt's a great idea too that I didn't even think of:) and she'd probably really love it. How much yogurt is ok to give btw? Since it's a dairy product I don't want to over do it. |
