Expressing Anal Glands for Yorkies I observed my little 3 year old Spuddy scooting or dragging his little bottom around on the carpet yesterday after his evening walk. I did some research and found out that the scooting or dragging their bottom around is a result of having swollen anal glands. Now after reading up on this and the cause and remedy of expressing the glands, I found it to be gross! However, I am willing to do anything to help my little prince feel better. I didn't realize that you can express the glands yourself right at home? A vet on youtube was giving a live demonstration on how to express the glands on your dog or cat. I have to say that it looks so easy and the dog seems kind of happy to have had it done. My only concern and fear is that I don't want to do it out of fear of hurting my little prince. There are some people who don't do it or advise against it (because dogs certainly don't get these expressed in the wild!). I think if your dog has solid poop they should express themselves... or something like that. I am not very anal-gland savvy (did I just say that? haha :D :D). My info could be totally wrong. But anyway I get my dog's glands done at the groomers! I don't trust myself with it annd it's not something I really want to be doing myself anyway. :p |
It could also be worms or irritation. It is likely the glands though. the scooting does indicate that they need to be expressed (better not to start if you don't have to, but you may need to now). Opinions vary quite a bit on whether it is okay for owners to do it, esp. without a vet doing a demo for you. I have been told that there is no special method and damage isn't going to occur (and if it does, it probably had nothing to do with your method). Talk to your vet and see if they min dyou doing it... |
I would ask the vet to show you how. Some dog's express easily, some are more difficult. Having the vet do it, he will be able to tell you better of what to expect with your own dog, then study the Utube videos and wait for the next time. |
I agree. I would let the vet check out the cause for this episode and then show you personally how and let you watch, let him show you the pressure to use with his fingers against your own hand, etc., so as not to bruise the anals Since I've been a member of YT, I have learned of the different schools of thoughts on expressing and it is worth mentioning to your vet when you have your baby there - get his input. Spuddy - love that name!!! |
I agree you should probably have your vet show you the first time. It's not exactly difficult, but it is tricky to get the hang of "squeezing" in the right spot. Warning though - it is the worst possible smell on the face of the earth:p. If you do decide to do it at home, do it in the bathroom with papertowels close by (warm wet ones too to clean your dogs behind) and airfreshner for afterwards, it's nasty! We always used these aloe wipes for the area afterwards also to sooth since it's not the most comportable thing for the dog (as I would imagine;)) Most dogs don't need it done, but for whatever reason, some do. You're dog is showing classic symptoms though. |
I'd try feeding a little brown rice, and some apple pieces as treats for a few days to see if the increase in fiber helps the problem naturally. |

Take the pup in to have the anal glands checked/expressed and at the same time you can have the vet instruct you in the proper way to check if expression is needed and how to express them. |

Thank you all for your comments regarding my baby's scooting. I did take him to the vet and the vet did express the gland. However, she did mentioned that it wasn't that much. As for Yorkietalkjilly, Thank you. I'm glad you love my baby's name. |

Please do not attempt to express the anal glands at home, or even try it after watching it on youtube!!!!! Dogs are supposed to express them themselves, example, if they get scared, they will express them, things like that...however, it is best to take him to the vet and have them do it. A lot of times, groomers will express them, but they do not do it correctly. The vet actually goes into the anus and squeezes them a certain way to extract them. If you do this on your own, and don't do it well, they can get an infection, abcess, or sometimes the anal glands can pop out, and that makes it worse. Usually, when they scoot their bums, they need to be done, since they are full...and let me tell you, when they express the glands it STINKS! Good LUck! |
