two questions.. food/potty and in between... Hi guys, I wanted your advice on two issues I have with my little guy. 1. I am working on finding a better food for Tiesto after learning about the differences from other threads. He used to eat Nutro- Natural choice for small breed puppies and on Saturday I got him a small bag of Orijen for puppies to try it out after hearing a lot of good reviews about it. He seems to like the taste of it and eats it well although in smaller portions than he used to (I free feed him). The problem is that I noticed he started pooping more often and his poop is softer than it used to be (and smelly...) I am wanderring if it's temporary due to the change or maybe it's just that Orijen is not the best choice for him...? 2. The second question I have is also bathroom related lol... We had our first playdate this Friday with another yorkie boy who came to our house. The guest yorkie apperantly is not housetrained very well and had accidents here and there. Then I noticed that Tiesto also started having accidents while playing with this guy. At first I thought that it's due to exsitment and he was probably too busy playing and didn't want to stop and go to his Pad... But the thing is that even after they left he kept doing so... (I have to say that he is not completly trained yet but he was good about going to his pads specially when downstairs and close to them). Now the thing also is that he started peeing more often, and i'm starting to think that maybe it's not just a step back from his potty training but maybe it's some kind of an infection? do dogs get those? I'm not sure what to do here... I really thought we are doing well with this issue and making progress but it seems that one playdate was all that was needed to undo all the hard work :(:( Please share your thoughts and experience with both issues, Tiesto and I would appreciate it very much... |
With the food issue, probably is due to the change unless you mix the new with the old a little bit at a time. Maybe cut back on portion of new food and mix in old and work up. Potty issue is likely excitement due to visit of other dog and then regression due to the other accidents, wanting to potty where new scent is. Just clean the area with the odor removers, restrict the dog from getting to those areas, go on with usual potty training and he will come back to the previous point of training. Regression happens frequently for one reason or another but if we stay with training, one day they are fully trained. |

Regarding the potty training, the thing is that I noticed he goes more frequently, for example he usually sleeps through the night without going potty until the morning, however the other night we had to go downstairs 3-4 times in the middle of the night for him to do his business... that's why I was wandering if it can be something more than regression... |
Is he drinking more water then usual? About the other yorkie who came to visit , he probably was marking, and that smell is now in your house. if it were me, i would have my carpets shampooed , especially for dogs . That way , hopefully the smell will be gone, and your boy will began using the pee pads again. If you are really concerned about the frequent urinating , and it is not getting better, I would take your little guy to the vet just to make sure he is ok. |

Any puppy is subject to some bowel frequency from time to time, no doubt due to several factors but if the stool is back firm again, it was probably just one of those things. If not, get a vet check to be certain nothing medical going on just to be sure. |
It seems like we're doing better on both issues... :D I cut back a little on the new food to allow him to get used to it and as for potty I restrict him so he has no choice but going to his pads. I didn't think about the option that the other Yorkie was marking, he is too young but you actually might be right... ohh well, we live and we learn... :) Next time we'll go to the dog park ;) Thank you so much for you input!! |

I have been able to correct this behavior by doing the following: 1) Throw out any area rugs on which the other dogs accident occurred; 2) Bleach any tile / door jam / etc on which the other dogs accident occurred; and re-bleach after Remy "re-marked" there. 3) My carpets are very close to white so I've actually put a highly diluted bleach solution directly on the carpet where accidents occurred (I initially used pet-odor carpet remover, and Remy would still go to those areas and sniff; 4) used a pet-safe carpet freshener in the areas after the bleach; 5) Immediately after all of the above, I would literally follow Remy if he ventured near these areas - and would repeatedly say - "you potty outside". After a few mistakes, I've gotten Remy back on track It is SUCH a pain tho - this guest dog is a nightmare. |
