Diarrhea - Adult Yorkie Sydney, who's going to be two in June, has had diarrhea with bouts of constipation during the day since Saturday night. Her droppings were very soft Friday night. She had diarrhea again last night after not going all day. She hasn't gone since eating breakfast this morning. I started giving her brown rice mixed with a few bits of her regular kibble yesterday for her meals. I had read online to starve an adult dog with diarrhea for 24-48 hours to work out whatever is in their system, but that seemed a bit harsh. That's why I am doing the rice instead. History: On Friday, with the nicer weather, we went to the dog park. I started training her to not to bark at other people with positive training. Every time she did something good, she got a treat (her treats are actually bits of dog food we get as free samples from the pet store). It was a grain-free treat we had never tried before. The soft poos started that night with full blown diarrhea the next night. On Thursday, while we were at the dog park, she had drank from a mud puddle, but the diarrhea didn't start until Saturday night. Is there something else safe I could try, or just give it one more day? I'm willing to call the vet now, but I want to make sure I'm doing all I can before panicking and calling the doctor. Thank you! |
give her some canned pumpkin, not the pie filling but pure pumpkin. i give jj about a teaspoon or two and it useually works great. i read about it on here when i first got him and it seems to be great. hope it works for you. |
After this long and still problems, run her into the vet to be sure nothing vile oing on. Much better safe than sorry when it is your baby. |
I had heard about pumpkin, but I wasn't sure. Thank you! I just hope I can find some here. I will call the vet to see if it's been long enough, or if I should try pumpkin and give it another day. |
I just called the vet's office. The woman said to give her a bland diet of just rice and hamburger or chicken. Small portions several times during the day. If no improvement, I should call back. I told her about the mud puddle, but she said unless it had gasoline in it, it shouldn't have caused this problem. She thinks it was the treats and that her system is out of whack. I will post an update later, but any other suggestions are welcome. |
Chicken and rice is fine. Could have been the new treat. Could have been the puddle. As long as she isn't having enough episodes to start dehydrating, it probably won't hurt to wait a bit longer. If she is going 3 or 4 times a day and it is extremely soft or liquid, I'd be concerned about her hydration status. Opinions do vary, but if a pup has diarrhea and a bland diet doesn't help, withholding food for 24 hours isn't harsh. Your vet can give her something if it continues. Pumpkin works for some and not for others. Makes issues worse here. |
Thank you for your reply. She still hasn't had a bowl movement since about 2 this morning. She waters normal and plays as if all is well. I will keep doing the bland diet and I pray it will work. Is plain venison okay with the brown rice? It's very lean like chicken. |
Sydney seemed to be a bit better, but her stool was still soft with a great deal of mucus. Then, my parent's Yorkie Ginger also started having diarrhea. They both went onto the brown rice and cooked venison diet. I eventually brought mine in to the vet. The vet said that she was getting back to normal. Stools were tested. The culprit? Black oil sunflower seeds. My parents feed birds off their back deck where the girls play. The feeders have since been moved. Sydney's stool seemed close to normal at four this morning. |

Thank you for sharing because my grandfather likes to eat sunflower seeds since he quit smoking, and he leaves trails of shells sometimes. Granted, I don't let Rylie eat anything that isn't something I give her (yay for "leave it"). However, it doesn't mean that if I didn't notice the mess she wouldn't go at it :p Now I know to be extra careful when we're around grandpa! :) |
