I think a lot of people here tend to bathe their yorkie on average of once every one to two weeks. Here's a site you can use to help you choose a food if you'd like: Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings Good Luck!:) |
It is not typical for yorkies to really stink unless there is a medical reason of some kind such as skin infection or yeast . I would say it's time for a vet visit. Also you should Never use human shampoo for your dog. Welcome to YT:) |
Yeah I didnt know about the human shampoo i use to have a soft coated wheaten terrier and it was fine..and he has been scratching for about 2 weeks now he is fine when i give him a bath for the first couple days then he doesnt stop..and the smell is more of a dog BO smell..and does that spray work? |

Keep in mind that Yeast itches & burns terribly. Also it could be a staph infection from him scratching so much so you really need to know what he's got to treat it properly. |
Roxy has been a little more itchy since the all this darn pollen blew in, maybe he's got allergies. As far as the stinkies, Roxy only smells when she plays with my roommates stinky dog but they love each other so much I can't deny them their play time. I use Tropiclean Pet spray in between baths, you can use it as much as you want because it not only soothes their skin it conditions their coat as well. Also you can find some type of waterless foam shampoo for doggies at most pet supply stores, they are also very soothing for the skin and they work just as good as a bath. |
I think it is fine to bathe more than every 6-8 weeks. I'm sure a lot of people do. Snickers gets a bath once a week. If your dog doesn't have fleas, the itching could be from a number of things. Allergies to food or environmental things, dry skin...I personally notice my dogs itching get worse when my own allergies are bad. This is definitely the time of year for it. If you suspect food allergies you will need to try an elimination diet. There is probably a lot of information on that here, but of course, always ask your vet. You may want to try giving a fish oil to help with the itching. I used to give 1/2 a capsule. My dog loved it. Are you using a conditioner during baths? If you would like to find more information about shampoos and conditioners that a lot of people here have tried and recommend there is lots of info. in the grooming forum and in the Yorkie products forum. |
So we got him Blue dog food (with Salmon) and got him some bennadryl today so hopefully this will work and where can you get that Tropiclean Pet spray or spray dog shampoo? Thank you everyone for your response ( i know for a fact its not fleas) |

Probably the same place you got the dog food from. Any Petsmart or Petco or local pet supply store :) |
Gus used to be constantly itchy. Eventually, after some trial and error, we found that he is allergic to treats with dyes. Also, we add baking soda to his rinse water when we bath him. He gets a bath approx. every 2 weeks. |
I use minksheen on Ziva but you can only get it online... I found when she was a puppy to rinse and rinse- her hair is so fine and she was so wiggly I wasn't getting all the puppy shampoo out, she got a row of raised bumps and dry spots behind her head and scratched terribly. |
there are usaly many things that can cause an itchy yorkie but let me warn you about one spay I used that burnt my female yorkie badly PRO-PET ITCH RELIEF I bought at Walmart for pets |
Welcome to YT. Where is he scratching? Did it start w/ pollen season in your area? Is he chewing/licking his paws? A dog w/ allergies should be bathed 2x a week, then move down to 1x a week once symptoms improve. Oatmeal shampoo can actually further inflame the skin of an allergy dog. Please get him to the vet asap and have them do a quick skin scraping (to look for bacteria) as well as a culture (takes 10 days to check for yeast). The smell makes me think it could be yeast. This kiddo needs Vet treatment, and also a prescription shampoo. Sprays and over-the-counter stuff shouldn't be used until you have a diagnosis. Med for allergy dogs would be Temaril P, Atopica, Steroids, or OTC anti-histamines. |
We got a 3 yr. old yorkie a few months ago. She has stunk since the day we got her. Took her to vet, first they said her anal glands needed draining; then it was an ear infection, antibiotics given; then a skin scraping and it was yeast infection, more antibiotics and medicated shampoo. Nothing has worked. I've given up on vets. Went to dog health food store, they said to take off grains, which we have done and are giving her an herbal extract for yeast and fungal infection. I just got through bathing her and the smell is coming back, it never seems to go away. Searched the internet until blue, someone suggested Malaseb Shampoo (which is no longer in business), which I found at a pet store 30 miles away. Not working. Oh well, we have just about run out of options. |
You have alot of good advise here, so I won't be redundant, just one quick thing I wanted to point out. I personaly don't use anything at all made by Hartz (I think you said that's what shampoo you used after the human one). If I followed correctly he was itching before that, so it may not be the cause of the problem, I just really dislike that company. Working for a vet, we saw alot of cases of dogs and cats treated with their topical flea treatment that had really bad chemical burns (one cat even lost most of his fur and was foaming at the mouth:eek:). I don't know anything about what's in their shampoo, but I won't touch their products with a 10 foot pole after what I've seen. Like I said, not saying it was the cause of your problem, just wanted to point that out as an FYI:) Welcome to YT:D |

What have you tried since your original post? Has he been treated for the itching at all either OTC or by something from the vet, oral or topical? You need something to get it under control for now regardless of the cause or he can get a bad skin infection. What are you feeding him? Have you bathed him again, if so with what? There's alot of different things that could be going on here, either food allergies, reaction to the shampoo you used, environmental alergies, even possibly mange:eek:. You need a vet that will do a skin scraping to check if it is something like mange, that's transferable to humans and nothing to mess around with and since (I think) you said he came from a shelter, it's possible. Has he been thoroughly checked for fleas and flea dander (poop)? Alot of people assume it's obvious when a dog has or has had fleas, but I've seen a ton of people be really surprized to find out their dogs does/recently did. There's just a ton of possibilities and you have to rule so many things out sometimes before you get to the cause |
Sounds so much like I went through with my girl, Molly. After thousands of dollars on vet bills, skin biopsies, etc. we finally tried at least 10 different foods and Blue Buffalo fish and sweet potato was the only thing that stopped most of her itch, along with once a month in between shampoos she was bathed with selsum Blue. Alot of the time my vet said you never know for sure but by eliminating things one by one , you can zero in. Also she was on benedryl twice a day in the spring/summer sometimes. My poor girl scratched so much she got her toe infected and had to have it amputated. I was at wits end also and getting broke quickly. When they are so umcomfortable , its very hard to watch . |

I'd see a veterinary dermatologist at this point, especially if it's getting worse. How's his weight? Was his thyroid tested (it would have been a specific blood test)? |
He is right now on Blue with salmon and it stopped for a while we have been trying bennadryl and its very hard to take him to the vet because it is sooo expensive i know it is not fleas due to the fact that we live in vegas and we dont have fleas here |

The fact that he is losing fur and his skin is now red, means he could be also have an infection (all over). He's miserable, from what you're saying; he needs you to take him in for help. Please take him to a Vet Dermatologist; my Vet Derm has offices in Las Vegas - and it's very easy to get an app't there: Las Vegas, Nevada Las Vegas Animal Emergency Clinic 5231 West Charleston Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89146 Phone: (702) 821-1002 Fax: (702) 821-1007 Las Vegas, Nevada Animal Emergency Center 3340 East Patrick Lane Las Vegas, Nevada 89120 Phone: (702) 434-1002 Fax: (702) 821-1007 |
Hartz is bad news read up on these peoples stories here HartzVictims.org - One More Victim is One Too Many Also maybe try Tropiclean or medicated shampoo and take him to the vet to see if there is an infection. The only smell I would think YT or any dog should have is is from playing outside or walks lol. Minnie never has the dog smell unless taken on a walk. I hope things get better and also he may be allergic to what you have used on him as well. Quote:
