Treats.... I was wondering if there are some treats out there that I can feed my yorkie that wont make her sick?? When I brough my yorkie home 2 weeks ago, she had tummy problems... She had some really bad diarrhea... I took her back to the breeders and she got her put on something for her tummy... One reason I know was her food, I started switching her over to puppy chow, and I think I may have switched to fast, the breeder also said it was the new enviroment, but I've NEVER had this issue when I brought a puppy home... Anyways... I wanna start training her, and doing it with out treats isn't working very well... I am scared to feed her anything other than her dog food cause I am scared its going to upset her tummy... I tried a little bit of cheese today, and she threw it up and now her tummy is making some weird nosies... Kinda like she's hungry, but she just ate... I don't know if she threw up cause the cheese or if it was cause I had her on her back rubbing her belly and playing with her... Now I am scared that her tummy is going to got back to what it was and I really don't want that to happen... |
First, Puppy Chow isn't the greatest food out there. It's probably considered one of the worst. For now though, I'd worry about getting her tummy in order before switching foods, but for the future, some brands available at Petsmart/Petco would be Natural Balance, Wellness, Solid Gold, Merrick, Castor & Pollux. My fav kibbles are Acana (Champion Pet Foods) and Go!/Now! (Petcurean Pet Foods)... there's also Nature's Variety, Fromm, etc. You can check out Dog Food Reviews | Dog Food Ratings for some help. :) I like to look for named meat in the first 2-3 ingredients, no by-products, no wheat/corn/soy or anything like 'meat and bone meal' or just 'animal fat'... any unnamed meat source is scary, IMO, because you don't know where it's coming from. You want it to look like chicken, chicken meal, whitefish meal, etc, etc. I do use cheese to train Jackson because it's his favorite... I buy those cheese sticks which make them easy but maybe the cheese is a little too rich for her tummy right now. I'd try dog treats without too many ingredients in them (I personally use Canz Real Meat dog treats) or you could use plain boiled chicken which shouldn't upset a stomach. Good luck!!! And welcome to YT!! |
I almost always use Wellness treats, and the great thing about them is that you can break them up into a lot of pieces so the bag lasts forever :D Also, there's a brand and the treat is called Pure or something Pure and it's really thin and they love it, and like Brit said it's a limited ingredient treat. Good luck:) |
I'd get a better food first. Wellness is a good brand and available at Petco. You might have a pup with a sensitive stomach. Pumpkin (canned) is good for upset tummies. I've used it for diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and it works well. You might also want to try plain yogurt or a diet of rice and boiled chicken for awhile (not sure if this is ok for puppies?). As far as treats go, you can use: Small pieces of kibble (helps to have a diff brand than the reg dog food you feed, for variety) Small pieces of low fat cheese Cheerios Small pieces of veggies or fruits (carrots, apples) Treats that don't have a lot of extra added ingredients. Like treats that are just pure turkey or chicken. There are some on the market that are like "pumpkin and banana" "apple and blueberries" etc. I haven't read the ingredient list (and I can't remember the brand) but they looked good. Small pieces of low-fat cheese |
I use "little greenies" for training Teddie, they are called pill pockets and can be broken up into 20 little balls each treat. They also have a new one by Blue Buffalo that are tiny little soft hearts that can be used for training treats. Both good makers and not full of preservatives and stuff. |
I use little bites of mellon and yogurt drops |
Thank you everyone for the good advice... I have taken her off puppy chow, I've got her one Natural Balance... Its what she was on before... Her tummy is doing so much better! She does this coughing and sneezing thing... I took her to the vet and she said her heart and lungs sounded perfect, but it still bothers me... Can't figure it out, she wakes up in the middle of the night coughing and sneezing... |
