Blood work before dental?? Is it necessary or advisable to have pre-op blood work before a dental cleaning, if the dog has had previous blood work within a year or 2? I insisted on blood tests before spay surgeries, the tests that have to be done days ahead and sent to an outside lab rather than the smaller tests done in-house (can't remember the names of either). All were fine, and now pups are approaching ages 2 and 3, and at least one is going to need dental. |
I would have the blood work done. My vet will not do a dental without it. |
I always do as do not want to subject Tibbe to any procedure or anesthesia without a current baseline of his body chemistry. Something could have developed since last blood tests and your vet need to know it. |
Yes. All dogs really should have yearly blood work anyway. Too much can change with their organs over that period of time. And the CBC is pretty important to make sure there is no infection present, that platelets are okay, etc. You might get away with doing it in-house though. |
My Vet won't do Dental unless blood work is done. Even if they did do the Dental with out the blood test's, I would have it done any way's. |
My Vet offers the blood work and Iv, I always get them both. I paid about $230 for his last dental, but it gives me a little discount too :D |
Thanks everybody, you have confirmed my feelings. The receptionist at the vet office was indicating that it wasn't necessary because they are young, and had had clear results and undergone surgeries in the last year or 2. Better to be safe, even if it means an extra vet appt. in advance (which takes 4 hrs. out of my day including driving). |
I would always have it done... my vet suggested maybe skip it if it was done no longer than 30 days, then at least repeat a general pre op panel. |
If they are able to do it in-house, they should be able to do it the morning of the dental. |
When Daisy was seen at the board certified dentist for her fractured tooth and surgery/cleaning, she had to have bloodwork that was current within 3 months. ETA: I like a fresh blood draw so would do it within a few days of surgery. |
